My Step daughter and wife have their interviews in Milwaukee in a little over a month. On the appointment letter they list a number of items to bring to the interview, one of which states "Birth Certificates for all children of this marriage, and custody papers for your children and your spouse's children not living with you". I am assuming this is a blanket statement on all appointment notices.

I read this as having to bring my (sponsor) custody documents for my son of a previous marriage, AND we need something for my step-daughter. Unfortunately for us I guess is that Ukraine doesn't issue any type of "custody" documents. We turned in the permission from the absent parent at the Embassy as required for her to be able to come to the states, but that was it.

Has anyone encountered this? We will have everything else, but this is a bit worrisome.

You did not make a copy, to keep, of said document you turned in to the embassy? If you have a copy, you can just take that to the interview and supply the explanation you've just given above.

Good luck,

My divorce decree (from the UK) said I had sole custody of the kids. They never asked me for anything at the interview.. now whether that was bc they did not want to see anything or they clocked it on the decree I don't know.

Actually.....NOW we read it as though they are asking for those documents for children NOT living with us. Clear as mud. We have an original "permission of absent parent" but no longer have the certified translation of it. I suppose we could just deal with that.

Still interested in anyone who had that issue come up at the interview......

Unfortunately Ukraine doesn't do that like in the west. It's my catch that the children always go to Mom unless contested. So, I guess we'll take the absent parent's permission ti immigrate with us and hope for the best if it is even needed.

Thanks

I would just take the document you have from the absent parent it should be enough. My ex's son (who I sponsored) had his interview in Nicaragua and that was the only thing required pertaining to custody.

We are dealing with the same custody papers problem.

Received an RFE for custody papers... so my wife made a trip back to Ukraine and she can not find anyone that will help her and her ex-husband create custody papers for her son. It is not part of the divorce like it is here in the USA.

So we are going to write a letter explaining this and send what we have and hope for the best.

going to contact my congress woman just to be safe.
