Every February, Cornell University sponsors the Great Back Yard Bird Count. When I first moved to the States I wasn't able to work so I found myself spending a lot of time becoming more familiar with the many birds we have visiting our back yard. Joe had two feeders up - and I ended up putting up a lot more so we actually have 8 feeding stations now. I had never been interested in birds before but I had the time and the birds were here so I started finding out more about them. The following February I participated in my first Back Yard Bird Count - and this year was my third time participating. The results are still being tabulated but you can check out some of the lists of birds from your area at their website: http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/

Of even more interest may be the many wonderful photographs that were taken during this year's count. I thought some of you might enjoy looking at them - and for some newcomers to the States, this may be an interest you can develop and follow up until you are able to join the workforce:-).:

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Cool stuff. I saw a bald eagle on my way to New Orleans last week. It was the biggest one I've ever seen.

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood
