Obama will get the Dem nomination after a nasty fight.

The negative campaigning will commence.

The effort to cast doubt on Obama's ability to lead will be brutal (if you thought the anti-Kerry effort was nasty, wait til you see this one).

Resulting suspicion about Obama's suitability for President will lead to many crossover votes from Dem moderates (mainstream America wants change, but not at that risk).

Conservatives will still complain about McCain, but they'll show up to vote for him anyway to keep Obama out.

McCain will be the next President of the United States.

If and only if, McCain can downplay the importance of the war. Considering all the borrowing for the war is contributing to our current financial woes, that will be hard. The war is his Achilles heel.

He recognizes that:

I don't think there's any doubt that how they judge Iraq will have a direct relation to their judgment of me, my support of the surge," McCain added. "Clearly, I am tied to it to a large degree."

This point will be key point in the Obama strategy. However, Obama would have to convince the voters that his strategy for ending war is better than McCain's. The McCain people will attack Obama's war postion as "cut and run" and unneccessary surrender.

At least for some, he has to change his position entirely to get their support. I don't think he is too willing to do that.

Does he have one?

garya, the point is moot, because Hillary will be the nominee. She voted for the war, not against it.

It'll be Hawk v Hawk.

I can't believe you still think that, Gupt!

Nah, he will get the anti-Obama vote anyhow. I might be in that group as well. Who knows. Maybe Nader.

On Hillary voting for the war. Being a senator from NY, and how the war was sold in connection to 9/11, do you think she could have voted against it without a mob removing her from office? I don't like Hillary, but i don't think she could have voted against the war.
