We have to add on to our house soon and I'd like to try to use environmentally friendly methods as far as our budget will allow. We are talking about an addition 15' X 32', no basement, and a kind of a short second floor (in order to fit with the original house). I'd like to put 5' "knee" walls on the upstairs, rising to 8' ceilings in the center of the upstairs.

I'm thinking monolithic slab foundation (using concrete with flyash), 6" walls, reflective whateveritis under the roof to help keep it cool in the summer... stuff like that.

Any ideas, experience, websites, etc... that anyone has found helpful and can share, we'd really appreciate it.

Maya

Be careful with some "green" building officials, as a lot of installations are just "greenwashed," meaning that they are not truly green.

The only question I have is with the knee wall and reflective barrier. Obviously, that can only be used in true attic space. Just make sure that the ceiling is well insulated in the sloped portion. How is the attic set up as it is now? Insulation on the ceiling or under the roof deck? Is the attic sealed?

Make sure that your contractors are installing the insulation properly (ie not side-stapled, etc).

There are several "green" techniques that are not possible given it is an existing house. That said, if you have any specific questions or ideas, you can PM me.

Thanks you guys for the suggestions and the link... I really appreciate it!

To clarify: the addition will be new. The existing part of the house will be renovated after the addition is finished.

Thanks again...

Maya
