Christian Bale was pretty good, I thought, in American Psycho - I think that's the best thing he's done to date. I also quite liked him in The Prestige.

See my other post. I hated that movie and all of the people that recommended it to me. I understand what they were trying to do, but the execution was pitiful. I may not have been so pissed about it had people not sold it to me like it was the best movie since Citizen Kane.

What didn't you like about the execution?

The plot was just way too disjointed and I honestly found Bale's performance rather uninteresting.

Oddly enough - American Psycho is very similar to Fight Club. Which is odd - because if you read the books, they are actually quite different.

There are whole chapters in there devoted to Patrick Bateman's love of the artistic merits of Genesis and Phil Collins.

I though Fight Club was pretty good. The plot in American Psycho just seemed to lack any direction throughout most of the movie.

I would probably enjoy the book if I read it. Honestly, I think that Bale's performance was the last straw for that movie. Like I said, the idea of what they were doing was good, which I'm sure is well-represented in the book, but the movie just stumbled to conclusion.

If you like books that spend half of the pages describing what the character is wearing and the rest describing what other people are wearing, what their place is in society, as well as a few brutal murders (graphically described, of course) thrown in for fun then yes, you will like the book. To be honest, in my opinion of course, the movie actually had more direction than the book. It is a brilliant book in its own right but certainly not a plot driven book that leaves you knowing exactly what just happened at the end.

but isn't that the point of the book? just focus on vane things, murders, and who has the best something?

Bret Easton Ellis got death threats when he wrote that book - mainly from feminist groups who objected to the graphic violence in the book - against women.

I do actually prefer the movie - they kept the essence of the book without the need for the excessive gore and brutality. I do like Bateman's monologues about how he was sweating with nervous apprehension about not getting a decent table in a restaurant, and getting stressed out because he thinks his co-workers have better business cards than him (even though they all look exactly the same). Also that stuff about the "artistic genius" Phil Collins.

but isn't that the point of the book? just focus on vane things, murders, and who has the best something?

It is - but when you're reading it some of that stuff is a hell of a slog.

I thought Campbell did Elvis pretty well though.

The DVD commentary with "Elvis" was great.

I have to agree to a certain extent. That same reasoning is why I sometimes will stop on the channel when a Seagal flick is on so that I can laugh at the horrible facial expressions and lame fight scenes.

Have you noticed that Seagal movies are seemingly always on TV? It's like the Caine-Hackman Theory from PCU.
