Fortunately I haven't seen many bad movies recently - I get some very good recommendations from friends and family.

But I did go and see Death at a Funeral, and wished I hadn't. It was the most unfunny comedy I've seen; all the jokes fell flat and left me squirming in my seat.

X-Men III

As the saying goes...More plots than a graveyard... poorly done.

The whole problem with that was that Bryan Singer, the director of the first two movies jumped ship to do Superman Returns, so they ended up with Bret "Rush Hour" Rattner.

I do think Christian Bale is a good actor - but he's done a lot of bad/mixed movies that don't require much of a range.

Daniel Day Lewis was damned good in There Will Be Blood - that's the best piece of acting I've seen in a long time. Of course he's a method actor, with all the psychological issues that go along with that.

My favourite actor though is Johnny Depp - He was a great actor long before he went mainstream. In fact the mainstream stuff is his least interesting work IMO - though he still gets it together to do some pretty remarkable performances. He was great in The Libertine.

I guess I just see Christian Bale as a stagnant actor. He has never played a part that made me think, "Wow, he made that movie." He doesn't do a very good job of becoming the part. He's just Christian Bale as Batman. Honestly, I think Cillian Murphy gave by far the best performance in Batman Begins.

Johnny Depp is hit or miss for me. He is a good actor, but he doesn't really pick his parts very well. He was great as Willy Wonka and I guess he was good in Pirates of the Carribbean, but the movie was not worth my time. I feel like he is best in Tim Burton flicks. I still think his best movie is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

As far as young actors go, I am becoming more and more of a fan of Elijah Wood. The guy is very good about picking his parts. If you haven't seen Everything Is Illuminated or Green Street Hooligans, you need to see them. Very good movies of his that are fairly recent.

You should check out The Libertine, which was pretty recent. Depp was easily the best thing in that. He's also very good as Ed Wood, and in a lot of the smaller movies he did - like Dead Man.

Oddly enough Depp was known for picking roles that interested him, rather than just collecting a paycheck for any old tosh - the way that Nicholas Cage tends to do.

These days he goes in for panto-roles - like those Jack Sparrow pirates movies. Really the least interesting stuff he's done. I think he makes those kinds of movies for his kids, more than anything.

Christian Bale was pretty good, I thought, in American Psycho - I think that's the best thing he's done to date. I also quite liked him in The Prestige.

No joke. I appreciated parts of it as a big X-Men fan, but the plot was SO far off of what I know about the classic storylines. Bret Rattner basically ruined the trilogy in that way. I was, however, VERY happy to see the emergence of the older X-Men characters like Beast, Colossus, Angel, and Iceman. The guy that was cast as Colossus was perfect and Kelsey Grammer WAS Beast.

See my other post. I hated that movie and all of the people that recommended it to me. I understand what they were trying to do, but the execution was pitiful. I may not have been so pissed about it had people not sold it to me like it was the best movie since Citizen Kane.

That movie was pretty out there - with Ossie Davis playing JFK.
