Hello All,

As I prepare for my fiancee to finally move here, I have a few question that people might be able to help me with.

1) How soon can we apply for her Social Security card? I am sure I have read that we can get this pretty much immediatly, but I just want to check.

2) We want to get married by a justice of the peace or a judge, but I cant find any information on who I contact about this, any ideas?

3) My fiancee wants to start school pretty soon after she arrives and I cant find any information about what she needs to bring from her home country to show admissions or how soon she can start after she arrives. Can she study on a k-1 visa or do we have to start the AOS before she can start studying?

Any help on these topics would be much apprciated.

1. After a week or two. It takes some time for entry information to find its way from the DHS to SSA.

2. Contact your county courthouse, they will tell you.

3. Yes, It does depend on the school you are looking to go too. If she has done any school beyond HS in her home country, you want to get transcripts so you can have them translated here in to college credits. Some school require you to reside in the area for a year, before you qualify for resident tuition rates.

If you go to school prior to becoming a PR, then you will have to pay fees as if you are an international student. After you receive the GC you will pay the normal fees and can even qualify for grants or student loans. Colleges and universities require that high school or college transcripts be evaluated by a service such as WES (link for World Education Service) What I suggest is you call the college or university to ask if they require a certain one. The college my husband goes to required that we use WES. It cost 160 dollars to get this done. You send a signed release to the foreign school and they send the transcript directly to WES or whatever service you use. They evaluate the transcript and send the results to you and the college of your choice.

Good luck

I just looked up weddings in the yellow pages and found a bunch of listings for justice of the peace.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip
