Another Q. About SSN

Hi,

okay i came on K-3 Visa, non-immigrant visa, and i applied for my EAD, and then i applied for my SSN and i got one it says on it VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHRIZATION.

so, now i have my GC. good for 10 years .. do i need go back to SSA office to change it and get a new one or i am ok ?

by the way, what does, DHS mean ?

Yes you go and show your GC at the SSN office, and they issue you an unrestriced SSN card that does not have that verbage on it, looks good without the added verbage.

Department of homeland security, it is always best to change it. There was a post a few months back about not giving up the old one in case it takes a while to get the other one. The day after my husband got his GC we went and got that phrase taken out, it bothered me more than him

Yes, anytime immigrations status changes you need to make SSA aware if this (Non-Immigrant --> Immigrant, and Immigrant to Citizen). They will remove the "With DHS auth" Note from the card.

Department of Homeland Security. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is part of DHS.

If they ask for your card say the dog ate it. LOL

2. Card Returned With Request For Replacement Card or New SSN

If the applicant has a card and requests a replacement card (duplicate or corrected) or a new SSN:

-- Ask the applicant to return the old SSN card. (If the applicant does not have the card with him or her, remind the applicant to return the old card to SSA for destruction or to keep the old card in a secure place [not in a wallet or purse]).

NOTE: Do not forcefully confiscate the SSN card if the applicant refuses to relinquish it. Similarly, return the old SSN card if the applicant requests that it be given back.

There is nothing that requires you to apply for the unrestricted SSN, since you already have a work authorized SSN.

Just less likely to cause you problems when someone asks to see your card. A lot of businesses and even some employers don't understand the reason that restriction is printed on the card, which is to keep you from using the card as proof of authorization to work. It otherwise doesn't affect the card or number.
