SSN question

I got my ssn using my EAD about a month ago. Since then, I have had my AOS approved and got my green card in the mail yesterday. My question is, do I have to go back to the SSA office with my green card and apply for a new SS card? The one I have presently says it's only valid with my work authorization, which I obviously won't be using now I have my green card.

Thanks for any help :)

Yes, anytime immigrations status changes you need to make SSA aware if this (Non-Immigrant --> Immigrant, and Immigrant to Citizen). They will remove the "With DHS auth" Note from the card.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

There is nothing that requires you to apply for the unrestricted SSN, since you already have a work authorized SSN.

Just less likely to cause you problems when someone asks to see your card. A lot of businesses and even some employers don't understand the reason that restriction is printed on the card, which is to keep you from using the card as proof of authorization to work. It otherwise doesn't affect the card or number.

If they ask for your old card say the dog ate it. LOL

RM 00201.080 Field Office (FO) Disposal of Returned Social Security Number (SSN) Cards:

2. Card Returned With Request For Replacement Card or New SSN

If the applicant has a card and requests a replacement card (duplicate or corrected) or a new SSN:

-- Ask the applicant to return the old SSN card. (If the applicant does not have the card with him or her, remind the applicant to return the old card to SSA for destruction or to keep the old card in a secure place [not in a wallet or purse]).

NOTE: Do not forcefully confiscate the SSN card if the applicant refuses to relinquish it. Similarly, return the old SSN card if the applicant requests that it be given back.

There's nothing that requires you but its always a good idea to notify SSA of your change in status.
