Marriage license NY state

Doing some research about marriage license and I saw that the NY State law for applying for a license is that both parties must be in attendance to sign the paperwork and that couples should give it a month's advance.

I know that there are many people here that got married almost immediately upon the spouses entry. Does the clerk's office really take a month to give you a license? What is the story here. We have decided to get a civil ceremony immediately to file AOS and plan a real wedding later.

With this in mind we dont want to wait a month for the license to come through. Does it really take a month and is there a way around this month waiting if I present the K-1 visa information to the county clerk?

Also if it does take that long which states around NY have different marriage laws to expedite this?

Any NY marriages out there... please help me

Emmett Fitz-Hume: I'm sorry I'm late, I had to attend the reading of a will. I had to stay till the very end, and I found out I received nothing... broke my arm.

I'm not from New York State but I found this link off the state's website.

http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/married.htm

It suggests that the marriage license is issued immediately but there is a 24 hour waiting period.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

In any way it is going to take at least two weeks to a month to get your marriage certificate which is what you need for your AOS and you need to get social security cards and other documents. So if you plan to get married and immediately file for AOS you will still need to wait a month or two after your fiancee enters the country

I don't know if this is true of New York state but in other states it apparently dependent on county. Your certified copy is delivered from the clerks office and apparently smaller population counties have quicker response times on delivering the certified copy. Maybe someone else from New York state here on the forums could help you out or you could call the clerk's office in a few counties and find out how long it takes.

yes you are right if you are married in a small county it may be possible to get it quicker but most likely you wont get your marriage certificate the same day When I was married in NY state we got our marriage license in one day and it took about a month to get our certified marriage certificate. Even in Las Vegas the marriage capital of the US you can get your marriage license the same day but it takes a couple of weeks to get your actual marriage certificate. Your marriage certificate is an official document and it takes a sometime to generate it and mail it.

Looking at a website for marriage requirements is not the best way to find out what is acceptable in your area

The easiest and most accurate thing to do is pick up the phone or visit your local authority - usually the County Clerk or Registrar's office.

Many of the 'scary' restrictions listed on websites are just 'disclaimers'.
