Hopefully someone (ie zyggy!) can help ;)

Here's my situation:

Canadian Taxes (I'll deal with US later on)

I last worked in Canada on December 31, 2006, but was paid within the first 2 weeks of January 2007 and was given January 1, 2007 holiday pay. So needless to say, I don't have a huge income from working at Home Depot for 2007!

I left Canada on February 5, 2007.

I started receiving EI benefits in March for 23 weeks (not counting the weeks I wasn't eligible until I received my GC).

I worked in the US from August 21, 2007 until present. I have my W-2 with my income (which is like $4500)

Questions

For Section 217, it states you are eligible to file under Section 217 if you were "a non-resident of Canada for all of 2007"

Since I was there until February 5, 2007, does this mean I don't qualify?

Is there anything else I should do / know? I will be going back to Ontario to visit in a couple of weeks, and my dad will be helping me with filing. He's our 'taxman' and is pretty good at it, for not being a Tax man

Thanks in advance! :)

Anyone? :innocent:

I'm not exactly an expert at international taxation

Here is some information on section 217: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/...iors_217-e.html sorry if you have already read this. I think it corresponds to what Zyggy posted previously about determining if filing sec 217 is to your benefit (you'll need Dad to run it through the program both ways).

Hope that helps.

Yes,

You do your leaving Canada return two ways..

The first includes all of your income up to the date that you physically left Canada... (Section 216)

The second includes all of your worldwide income inlcuding the amount you made while working in the US and your EI for all of 2007. (Section 217) You need to put Section 217 on the top of your return if you opt to do it this way.

Pick the one that benefits you the most.

Awesome,

Thanks to both of you for clearing that up.

I'm sure my dad and I can figure out which one will benefit me the most! :)

Thanks!
