I sincerely hope it's just me being cynical - but I can't imagine what a lawyer can do to speed things up aside from assist with the paperwork process. Now the fact that he works at your filing county's embassy in the US and can help makes sense. But it seems fishy to me that you would have to pay for that.

Are you saying that for a (big) fee, the person at the embassy is going to use his ties to push it through? Of course, either way, faster is better and surely worth the money. It just sounds strange to me.
