My husband had no clear understanding of the holocaust . It seems that the establishment of Israel and the subsequent fights between jews and palestinians have drowned out the gruesome horror of the holocaust to the point that some arabs in mena hate every single jew and there are people who say that the holocaust did not occur. Many arabs in mena do not really know what happened because the israel situation has drowned out the horror..

My husband did not know the true story of the holocaust...

Everything he knows he knows from me because they do not teach it in the school there ( many jews lost their businesses and homes and all the money in the bank when algeria became independent from france and they were forced to leave in 1962 after living there for 400 years

Thank you, Wahrania. I am sure once my SO gets here, that subject will be unavoidable, as all he has to do is look about . I have had a profound interest in the Holocaust since I was a child, and have quite a big library, as it were, on the subject.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

My husband "knew" about it but not in depth. I would encourage each of you to bring your spouses to Washington DC to the National Holocaust Museum. They will really be shocked and I've found at least with my spouse a small sense of compassion, but also confusion as to how now Jews could treat the Palestinians so badly after they themselves were mistreated. It's a question I often struggle with as well.

Wow that is interesting, never thought about someone would not have history of the Holocaust. I have been to Poland and seen the concentration camps, or what is left of them. Very moving and profound, I lived in Nurmberg, which where the trails were held. I have relatives still in Germany and when I would bring up the holocaust, it was always swept under the rug, oh that was a long time ago, don't think about horrible things. Good topic, will ask my husband his thoughts on the holocaust.

When I was in Germany in '95 I visited Dachau and it was unforgettable - I remember standing in the memorial garden and thinking this is one place that everyone should see so the victims' and survivors' lives are never forgotten. My best friend lost both sets of grandparents in the Holocaust. I wonder what people in other countries like Nepal learn about it - I have never talked about it with Govi but when he gets here he will learn about it from my friend.

We don't talk politics much because for one thing we don't get a whole heck of a lot of time to chit chat about things not related to everyday life and for another he's petrified whenever I attempt to bring up anything at all related to political things. He won't even discuss our election more than a few minutes, though I know he and his buddies all love Obama. lol.

BUT.........I was talking in the very beginning to him about WWII and I was shocked to hear that apparently some people in Cairo (obviously not the gov't) were rooting for Hitler. When I asked about that he said that the people during that time were very unhappy with British rule and with King Farouk who the British I guess installed in the 1930's.

I don't think they have been taught full history though so I would think that has hindered his perception of things.

Absolutely.

My husband had never heard of the Holocaust until we went through the museum in D.C. last year. We spent hours in there. He's still talking about it.

My husband knew but I don't think to the extent of what it really was. I think its pretty sick that a huge part of the Arab world denies it happened. What about that conference they had in Iran not long ago about the denial of it?

i noticed a similar thing with my german g/f back in the 90's - she thought hitler was great too. that was due to her lack of knowledge about all the things he'd done.
