NVC Case Number - What's it for?

I called them today, they said they forwarded the case today to the consulate and gave me the case number. What is this case number used for though?

I guess I could give a little more information. This is for a K1 petition. It was approved a week ago and sent to the embassy/consulate today. I'm just not sure what the case number they gave me is for.

NVC case number is very very important. With this case number you can track your K1 visa petition. you can see the K1 forums for the further steps involved , and how would your case move. Your case has been forwarded by the USCIS to the NVC for processsing. NVC is the only agency which processes all immigrant visa applications and scrutinises all documents.

You can cal 603-334-0700 .... follow the instructions ... you can talk to a operator too.. Its very busy .. so you would take 30 mins to talk to live operator and get the status of your case

I have never actually used the case number that NVC sent me, because Frankfurt sent us a new case number when we got packet 3. Btw, Frankfurt is SPEEDY. P got the packet from Frankfurt the day after I received the formal notice from NVC telling me the case was forwarded. If you're already at the embassy, I imagine your wait is very short.
