"Those who call for the abolition of the Electoral College are hostile to liberty. Not surprisingly, most advocates of abolition are statist elites concentrated largely on the east and west coasts. These political, economic, academic, media, and legal elites overwhelmingly favor a strong centralized federal government, and express contempt for the federalist concept of states’ rights. They believe in omnipotent federal power, with states acting as mere glorified federal counties carrying out commands from Washington."

What total BS. This guy has a real weed up his azz. You can't get a more opposite person to this description than me.

That was the Ron Paul and for the most part, his argument is solid.

No wonder I don't like Ron Paul. That was a bunch of bullsh!t and was as solid as jello.

Please explain.

The only true "will of the people" vote is the one person, one vote idea. Anything else and you don't have that. But I most object to his generalizations that the only people opposed to junking the EC are coastal elitests is downright insulting. I am not in favor of a strong centralied federal government. I strongly believe in states rights. I am a federalist in more ways than you can count. I do not believe in omnipotent federal power, and the states are not glorified federal counties. The guy has sh!t for brains if you ask me.

I agree with you on the elistist insult but he's a Republican and they like to throw that word around, especially when talking about California. :P

As for the concept though - do you get what he's saying about a true democracy where the majority rules?

Anything less than one person one vote isn't a true democracy. I can live with the problems pointed out in his story.

Should we do away with the Senate then?

What does that have to do with anything?

What does that have to do with anything?

Ron Paul pointed out that our Senate is made up of 2 Senators from every state, regardless of population. So how is that a one for one vote?

That isn't the president. I don't have a problem with RI having the same power as CA in the senate. Since the house is representitve of the states population and any laws must go through the house then it isn't a problem.

Gary, there is also such a thing known as "tyranny of the majority". I think our constitution is very well, in fact beautifully crafted piece of wonder. I'd rather not tweak with it too much.

"Writing as "Publius" in Federalist No. 10, and drawing on numerous historical examples, James Madison warned that the gravest threat to American liberties would arise from "the superior force of an interested and overbearing majority.""

here is a blog on that tyranny

I submit that the EC does nothing to safeguard that. I agree that the constitution is a wonderful document and I don't want it messed with without good reason. But ever since I first learned of the EC in grade school I thought it was a very unfair way to choose a president. I mean really, we vote for a delegate and then that delegate votes for president. What need is there for that?

i think the ec is still needed. as ron paul pointed out, if we go with straight popular vote, candidates won't even worry about a campaign in any state that is not in the top 10 populationwise.

run Nader run!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Two for one to be precise. Each state has two votes. This is one of two chambers of Congress which represents the states rather than the people. The people are represented in the House of Representatives. US government 101, Steven.
