Getting your original documents back at the Interview

I just went through the documents my Husband received back at his interview on Tuesday. Basically we submitted 3 originals to NVC. Our marriage certificate, my Husband's birth certificate and my divorce certificate.

Of these three originals we got 1 back - his birth certificate.

They gave us back a photo copy of our marriage certificate and nada on the divorce certificate, although the interviewer mentioned to him that they would send the copy of the divorce certificate back with his visa/passport (Husband says it was a photocopy as well, not the original).

So anyway, just wanted to let you know that you won't necessarily get your originals back!

Eventually they will give the original back. Sometimes, they can keep originals for for few days, but they usually return them with passport and visa.

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview

Will be interesting to see - the visa is in the post right now so I will update this when we receive the package.

We never got anything back, not fromt he embassy nor from the Immigration officer at POE. We really didn't care because some documents had an expiration date of 1 year and the others are pretty easy to get copies of.

Yeah, I'm not really worried about it, we can get copies of those two anytime - I know that some send their precious originals though and also ones that are hard to get from their countries.

I'm glad we did get my Husband's birth certificate back though as he is Australian so it's more of a hassle to obtain than the others.

This is the core issue about giving up original civil documents...and the consequences if the NVC looses something like a marriage certificate. I'm sure if they do loose something it's just tough luck as far as they're concerned. It makes much more sense to have the beneficiary bring the docs to the interview as was previously done.

I just heard on CNN a few weeks ago that the USCIS lost 115,000 applications for citizenship back in 2006! I don't trust these people.

I agree, they should be produced at the interview instead of mailing them to NVC.

Husband received his passport/visa in the mail yesterday - and the sealed brown envelope to present at the border. No additional originals were included. So unless they return them when they open that envelope at the border, guess they aren't going to.

I'm going to email the Montreal consulate to inquire.

Diana, we are Jan. I-130 filers, get NOA1 on 2/8. We have done the Birthday/Divorse Notation last Nov., how long do this two documents expires?

Base on current CSC Timeline( they are on 7/29 ), we may get our NOA2 in July. I am worry the birthday/divorse notation may expires. Thanks a lot for your help.
