A friend and I were discussing careers, and what we want to do when we get out of school. He's trained in Arabic, and the topic of working for the Department of State in a Consulate or Embassy as a consular officer came up. Apparently, they just had the qualifying exam for the Foreign Service last month, so it's too late to apply for this year. Has anyone ever considered joining the foreign service? I think it'd be fascinating to spend the next 20 years abroad, not to mention I'm sure a lot of us could use a consular officer that's sympathetic to our situation!

I would like to if the money didn't suck so bad.

Is the pay really that bad? I heard it starts at 38k, but I guess if you're used to making more money than that, then yeah, the pay would suck

You can do a lot better than that as a new college grad if you have the right major and skillset.

But then again, if you're starting out and you want to spend your career traveling, learning new cultures and representing your country and people abroad, then it's probably an excellent career choice. Comes down to priorities. I like to travel recreationally, business travel gets on my nerves ;)

My wife used to work at the State dept, not in Foreign service though. Worked along side many, and 1 of her aunts just retired this month from the SS. She loved it. Every 3-4 years travelled to a new destination. if you like to travel, it can be a great job. As I stated her aunt liked it, plus made some great contacts, which lead to work with a private company when she retired!! pay may not be super, but good benefits, and a secure job!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yeah, the pay may be low but the benefits are good - i think you get to fly home twice a year business class at the taxpayers expense, local as well as US holidays, good medical cover, etc

I actually took the test, ummm, many years ago. I didn't get contacted by the foreign service for the next round, but I did get a call from the CIA, which was a bit weird.

That's true. And don't forget living overseas for almost free. I work in personnel at the State Department, not in foreign service but most people I've worked with love the foreign service. Great career choice. I'm civil service but thinking about applying for a 2 year tour overseas for the benefits.

Good luck to you.
