I have a bunch of things to do on Saturday but I still want to manage to make some dinner. I'm thinking if I make a pot roast in my crock pot, I can kill two birds with one stone.

Soooo, how do you make pot roast?

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

How good is the pot?

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

Make a prime rib instead.

But, if you want to do a pot roast -

http://www.elise.com/recipes/archives/000307pot_roast.php

Make sure to sear the meat on all sides to seal in juices and to create that initial flavor from the seared bits. Slow cooking for a long, long period of time is the other trick.

I make it in my crock pot all the time - the kids love it and it's so easy.

This is what I do - you can do any variety or add your own:

Take a 2 - 4 pound roast and put in the crockpot. Add about 2 cups of beef broth (I usually add a can of chicken broth), add onions, garlic powder, dried spinach and basil for flavor, add carrots and potatoes and just turn on the crock pot. I usually put mine on at night and put in refrigerator overnight and then plug it in before I leave for work. On low, you can cook it for about 8 to 10 hours - I don't recommend high for a roast because the meat will get tough. I do this same thing for a whole chicken.

I also have a Lasagna crock pot recipe if anyone is interested.

Good luck -

aka Betty Crocker

Then with the leftovers, you can make roast beef BBQ.

Slow cooker crock pot. Do it all the time the night before.

I usually throw in carrots, onions, potatoes, tomatoes and fresh smashed garlic. Then add your roast that is seasoned with oregano, thyme and rosemary. I also throw in a jalapeno for added flavor. Then add about three to four cups of water and let cook all night long covered.

Bon a petite!

Never tried this one but allrecipes.com is usually good! This one has over 3000 good reviews too.

The way my family makes a pot roast is to put it in a crock pot (after searing the sides) with a bunch of cut up potatoes and carrots and whatever other veggies you like (onions, celery) and then fill it to the top with water as well as a pack of dry french onion soup mix.

Just noticed that recipe is a lot like the all recipes one - I know I love my parents pot roast so I'm sure that recipe will taste delicious!

Now I'm hungry :(

I love the crock pot !! Get a nice piece of beef round (about 2.5 - 3lbs in weight - serves 4 easily). Season the meat with salt and pepper and then sear it on the stove in a little oil until all the sides have browned. Put it in the crock pot with 2 cups of beef broth and 1 cup red wine (any old red wine will do). Next cut up a large onion and put that in the crock pot too. Add a teaspoon of garlic salt, a teaspoon of onion salt, 2 bay leaves, a good splash of worcestershire sauce, and a good shake of mixed dried herbs. Next add about 2 cups of cut carrots, and a cup of finely chopped celery. Give it a good stir, put the top on the crock pot and let it cook on low for 6 hours. MMMMMMM yum.

I think mashed potatoes are the best side to this meal. For mine, I make sure the potatoes aren't too small when boiling them in salted water. Usually take 25 mins to boil. When they are cooked, drain the potatoes, then put them back on the heat to evaporate any remaining water (about 30 seconds). Then, pour in a good glug of heavy cream and a good knob of salted butter. Next, add about a teaspoon of horseradish, and half a teaspoon of english mustard. Mash really well with a masher and then beat the mash fast with a fork (like you are whipping cream). This adds air and makes the mash really fluffy.

My hubby looooves it and I cook it once a week or so.
