DEVELOPING STORY

The U.S. Geological Survey said that a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit northeast Nevada on Thursday.

The quake was reported at 6:16 a.m. PST near Elko, which is about 430 miles north of Las Vegas, according to wire reports.

It had an epicenter of only 3.7 miles and struck in a sparsely populated area 11 miles southeast of Wells near the Nevada-Utah line.

There are no immediate reports of damage or injures, but people as far away as Salt Lake City, Utah, which is 230 miles from Elko, reportedly felt the quake when it hit

I'm guessing the epicenter had a depth of 3.7 miles.

Just once, I'd like to feel an earthquake.

It's creepy as heck. I felt one (very small) a few years ago and it felt like the ground underneath me had just rippled. My first thought was a bomb had gone off.

I've never felt an earthquake, but I have come close. In 1991, there was a major, emphasis on major, explosion at the Exxon refinery in Baton Rouge. My family lived about 10 miles from the refinery at the time, but it shook the entire house. The china was rattling in the cabinet. Anyway, everyone was confused but my dad. He just got big-eyed and said, "Exxon just blew up."

I set that one up for Nevada over a year and half ago. Next is Seattle and then LA although I've been told to lay off after making Hurricane Katrina.
