PALO ALTO, Calif. - Attending Stanford University next year will be a lot more affordable for some undergraduate students.

The university said Wednesday it plans to eliminate tuition for students with annual family incomes totaling less than $100,000. It also will pay most room and board for students with families making less than $60,000.

Financial aid director Karen Cooper says the move comes as middle-income parents express concern about paying for a Stanford education.

Stanford tuition is expected to rise to $36,000 in the fall. Room and board will cost about $11,000. About a third of the university's 6,700 undergraduates are expected to qualify for the tuition break.

$36,000 for tuition though - I don't know how anyone afford college these days. Is Stanford private?

Yes. I'm pretty sure. I went to a private college back in '96 ....the tuition back then was about half that cost.

Yes it is private.

And man is college daunting. My son is looking now (he'll be a senior next year) and it's so stressful. At this point our hope for college is scholarships to help us bridge the gap between income and tuition...Even the state schools in Washington are pricey. He's looking into school in Germany (he's fluent and he has the qualifications if he can pass the auditions) which is only aout $900 a semester.

Kudos to Stanford for taking this step.

Oh, it is private - I was thinking that seemed steep for a public university. Still, I hadn't realize top-flight private universities had got that expensive

I just checked UCLA tuition - about $7k a year. That's not a walk in the park either.

Damn, when I went to the University of Northern Colorado way back in the dark ages it cost me about $150 a quarter for tuition and fees and fifty bucks a month for a room.

No, but student loans are easily had. That sounds cheap for a good school like UCLA!

Hmmm... last time I checked, it cost somewhere around 22k (per semester) for my brother to attend Emory University in Atlanta, GA. The funny thing about that too is he was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin, but he said he wanted to go to Emory. Even if he hadn't had the scholarship, UT would've been a lot cheaper, since it's in-state.
