I am sure some of you here might have US citizenship status, Let's say my wife applied for US citizenship, will she be required to give up her indian passport in the citizenship process.

I have to get a visa to travel to India, but since my wife is India if she gets US citizenship

Will she need to get visa

Dual citizenship where she doesn't need visa i assume.

Anybody here with American partner in that situation?

You need to attend Oath ceremony(in person) to become a US Citizen..

Look into applying for OCI(Overseas Citizen of India) otherwise your wife will have to apply for Indian Visitor's visa once she is sworn in as US Citizen.

India does not have Dual Citizenship..

Yes , your wife would have to give up her Indian Citizenship. Her paspports should be submitted to nearest Indian consulate for cancelling. She could appy OCI though, it takes three months.

USC is acquired the day he/she takes the oath, which is the last step in the process. (During the rest of the USC process, he/she is still an Indian citizen and can use the Indian passport).

The moment an Indian Citizen acquires another country citizenship, he/she automatically loses the Indian citizenship. Submitting the passport to the nearest embassy is suggested however not strictly practiced. The nearest embassy will stamp "Acquired US Citizenship" and cancels the passport and send it back to the pasport holder.

Overseas Citizen of India (aka OCI ) takes about 2-3 months, however once she acquires OCI she'll never need a visa to travel to India and there are no travel and stay restrictions on it.

If there's a time constraint then she can apply for the Indian visa by mail which takes about a week. (in person, the same day) If she's staying in India for more than 180 days then she has to report to the local police station in India.

I have also researched all this, though we are not at that stage yet. Let me add that as spouse of an Indian citizen, we can apply for a 5-year PIO card, then we can visit India and stay as long as we want, no visa required. Link:

India does allow dual citizenship its called OCI - Overseas Citizenship of India. Go through the links I have pasted in my previous posts on this thread. It should help you!

Yes, OCI is like duel citizenship but with a few restrictions. The Indian citizen still has to give up their Indian citizenship. :(

OCI is not dual citizenship and India does not allow dual citizenship(s)...Although OCI maybe closer to a dual citizenship.
