I didn't see this, so I'm adding it to the list. My husband(American) says Canadians say "aboot" and not "about". I might have said it once for him to tease me about it in the past. Do Canadians really say "aboot"?

Mary

Some regions do. The west coasters say "about", though. They always say they know someone is from east of Alberta when they say "aboot".

I've found that people in BC pronounce it between the two, kind of "abowoot."

Nick thinks it's cute when I call dinner "supper"

I don't know why....lol

Maybe it's because we, in Louisiana, have Canadian heritage, but I usually say supper, also.

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

Me it's even funnier, because I picked up my english from my husband, I don't say most of these things.

I do say Zed instead of Zee because it's the same in French too...

But when someone says something that I can't pick up because they say it too fast...they are like "How do you say that in Canada? " I'm like , it's not because they say it different in Canada, it's because I'm French! And I have no clue how they say it in Canada...

I always thought lunch was "dinner" and supper was supper.

Mike thinks the same about me when I say "supper"

it's a size thing in west (at least that's how my grandma explained it when I was little and asked those types of questions). Dinner is the big meal of the day-therefore can be at either noon or evening. That's why I always use lunch and supper-they're time specific.

Some of the pronounciations are funny. One thing to remember...how you pronounce things is kind of like hearing yourself on a tape recorder. You don't sound how you think you sound. Point in fact....there are lots of Canadians who think they DON'T have an accent, or say "about", any different than anyone else. I hear myself say about, not aboot...so I'm like...is there something wrong with your hearing??? In effect, we don't hear ourselves the way others do.

A neighbour was walking down our street and I mentioned in the house that Donna was walking down the street. Gene broke out in hysterics. Saying...who??? haha I said, Donna! He said, how do you spell that? I told him. He laughed and laughed saying he's never heard anyone say that name that way. He said I was saying Dough Na. I said it over and over...nope...not what I was hearing. I've asked a few people since then, and they agree, they hear Dough Na. Who would have thought?

That's hilarious. I was saying in another thread that sometimes I think my husband has said one thing, when he's actually said another. So I'll be sitting with one of these looks  on my face until I finally realize what he's talking about. OR.... I'll ask him a question which is relative to what I THOUGHT he was talking about, and I'll end up getting the look  . That's when I know I've heard wrong.

Another thing I've noticed is I say "Pardon" a lot.

They say "say what now?" That's the real southern States though.

Nick and all his Jersey friends say "What happened?" I laugh and say "NOTHING HAPPENED! lol we are talking...you just didn't hear me, let me repeat myself"

SIGH!

Nick laughs at me when I say pardon. -_-

Here in North Carolina a toque is called a tobaggan. Cracks me up every time.

Being from the Northeast, I had never heard that until I moved to Georgia. Made me crack up too, because I would always picture someone wearing a big ol' sled on their head!
