Diction:

US / Canadian

Semi / Transport Truck

Line / Line-up

zee / zed

toque / beanie

Pronunciation

Saaawry / Soory (this is always a dead giveaway that I'm Canadian)

Baaysel / Bahsil (Basil)

When I say words like Mazda, Yamaha, Pasta, Yahoo and Nissan my husband cracks up and mocks me repeating the word a few times..

I also notice that Americans say "boo-coo" when they use the work "beaucoup" It drives me up the wall.

I think you have toque and beanie switched. I had never heard toque until I met Lindsay.

The over-pronunciation of the letter A always gets me with Lindsay. Everytime she says bag, I mock her.

That said, I am a southerner with a noticable accent, so I can't say too much.

Oops~

Canadians: Please

Americans: GIMMIE THAT BEFORE I SHOOT YOU!!!

It's a joke. I am kidding.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

That's awesome!

Cool, a reason to bring this up. Celica: American, "sell-la-cah"; Canadian "sah-leak-a". I used to own one and when it came up in conversation, my US husband had a wonderfully (annoying) holler at the way i pronounced it.

My husband is really into cars and bikes so makes and models actually come up quite a bit. And when they do, he laughs his a$$ off at me. To avoid being teased, I sometimes try and remember how to say it in American but it never works out.

For instance: What Canadians would call "running shoes," Texas (and I imagine most of the Southern states) refer to as "tennis shoes." However, in the northeast, they're called "sneakers." Because my parents always called them sneakers, my brother and I grew up saying that word (in addition to other terms as well). Doing so apparently identified us as "northerners" to the ears of many Texans, even though we were born-and-raised in the Lone Star state.

We call them sneakers too!!!!! And the same thing about the accents and being in a different area. My family is from England (my kids are the first Canadians) and whenever we go back home, the British pick up on the Canadian accent and think my parents are visiting from "America". But when we are in Canada, everyone hears a British accent and thinks they are visiting from England.

I didn't see this, so I'm adding it to the list. My husband(American) says Canadians say "aboot" and not "about". I might have said it once for him to tease me about it in the past. Do Canadians really say "aboot"?

Some regions do. The west coasters say "about", though. They always say they know someone is from east of Alberta when they say "aboot".

Canadian: Pop

I asked for a Pop once and my Fiance laughed and said something along the lines of 'you want to get shot?'.....LOL

This is all dependent on where you are. In SE Michigan they call it Pop, out here they call it pop, in Hawaii it's Soda. It seems the North East is where the term soda is generally spoken, but the rest of the country will either use pop or pop and soda. So that one definatly isn't a American/Canadian difference, just a locality difference everywhere...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Lindsay says runners. I say tennis shoes.

She did admit to me that she caught herself using y'all one time. She'll get the hang of it.

Canadian: Pop

Southern: Coke

I always laugh about this one. If you say soda or pop or soda pop down here, people are going to laugh at you. Every "soda" is called coke.

"Do you want a coke?"

"Sure."

"What kind? We have Dr. Pepper and Mountain Dew."
