I think wearing outside shoes indoors is kinda gross. I'm sure the people who do it haven't given a thought as to what could be tracked into their house on the soles of their footwear. Petroleum products, poop, fertilizers & other chemicals just to name a few. Not stuff I'd store in my house or want on my floors or ground into my carpets.

I was bewildered the first time I went to my sweetie's house and there was a tiny linen style closet in the long front hallway and nothing else. Now which came first, no closets (and therefore no shoe storage) or the walking in the house with shoes on?

Probably the no closets. No closets, no where to put shoes... We Americans are lazy :P

As someone else mentioned, pretty sure garbage disposals are illegal, at least in ON...but I can't find anything on google that proves that - they certainly aren't available at RONA or Home Hardware that I ever saw. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the garbage disposal, what a super way to get rid of food garbage, rather then the landfill. I ahd a few incidents when we first moved here where the dish cloth got lost and it turned out it had been sucked into the garbage disposal

Not quite sure how that happened????

All this stuff must be regional (or personal preference) - my husband and his family always take shoes off, even our teenagers. Mind you his best friend drives me nuts and never takes his shoes off until I finally asked my husband to remind him to do so - he didn't even wipe his feet on the front rug before walking in :(. Back home we obviously took boots off for a good 4-5 months of the winter so you kind of get into the habit!

ya know..my mother in law refuses to use the thing..she complains about it getting dirty and greasy...she even has one built into her maytag dishwasher and prewashes food sigh...she insists everything go in the garbage and stink up the house after a few days.

and ya i found out what it was when i flipped the switch while a spoon had fallen into it. Boy did i almost have a heart attack!

I googled Toronto Garburator and found a link that was City of Toronto and it said they are prohibited in areas served by combined sewers. So, the older districts of the city are not allowed them but the newer districts are.

I always keep some shower caps at my front door so I can throw them over my army boots in the winter if I need to just run in for a minute. :) It would work for friends who insist on keeping their shoes on in your house too.

Okay, I'm now in the US, and we DID find another culture difference that I had to include here because it was so funny!

The other day, we were deciding what to have for lunch, seeing as how we were unpacking the truck and moving boxes and such, I thought sausages on a bun would be great, not to mention easy! Honey said, yes, we can have sausage, I'll have to take you to the store to get some, and you can pick up what you want to go with it.

At the store, I said, "let's pick up the sausage buns while we're here first"

Honey looked at me blankly for a moment, and then asked, "what's a sausage bun, is it like a hamburger bun?"

I told him, "no, it's long and skinny like a hotdog bun" (at this point, I thought he had lost his rocker)

The bakery was after the meat section, so we were getting the sausages first, and honey took me to the freezer section because I said to him that I couldn't find any yet. He then showed me breakfast sausage patties. I said, "no, not breakfast sausage, I want regular sausages" He asked me, "do you mean links?" I thought that was just a different word for them, so said, "maybe" and he then showed me breakfast sausages, like the ones you pour maple syrup on. He really had no clue, so I told him, "they're sometimes frozen, normally fresh" Then he said, "like polish sausage?" to me that's a deli meat that you slice on sandwiches, so, no...

He really had no clue, but finally we went to the butcher, and I saw some sausages in the display, and what does my honey say? "Oh! Those are Brats! I have some in the freezer, but we need buns...."

Total facepalm for us both!

I have never heard of sausage buns either. I figured you were talking about brats as well, but wasn't quite sure. Never had either in Canada when I was there, except at town fairs that I remembered, we just ate good old fashioned hotdogs at home and never had a hotdog grill out like you do with steaks and burgers. Sausages were always the little breakfast things mommy would cook in the mornings. Though I would have never dared to put maple syrup on them ick...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

Good luck finding good sausage here that is all I can say. I'm from Kitchener Waterloo and I grew up thinking everyone had german style fresh pork sausage or smoked sausage.....uh no! Johnsonville Brats are about what you get or maybe sweet or hot italian sausage (which BTW I am sick of after 4 yrs). In my quest for good german sausage in VA I have eaten many poor substitutes. Sage breakfast sausage just doesn;t cut it.

What I wouldn't give for a good Schneider's Oktoberfest sausage :)

My sister in law introduced us to a nice polash deli, out in the nw subburbs of chicago, its about the only place i've ever seen decent sausages. Italian sausages are really blech after a while, and the johnsonville ones are not the same.

I really hate the sausage here. We have tried every type we found. The Italian sausage here is nothing like we got back home, and I miss the sausage buns too. I find that all the sausage here is about the same all watery way to much fat and no flavour no matter what brand you buy.

The one thing I can't get enough of is the queso cheese from the Mexican restaurant we go to. It is the only thing I want. Nachos with chicken and cheese. Oh and cold stone creamery. Yup I'm not here for the Southern food that is for sure Bleh.

I thought you were from KW, wasn't sure :) I am bringing a cooler with me at Christmas and I will bring back whatever the US Border guards allow me....hmm, I should look up their website, what do they allow...do they still block beef? I could bring Schneider's Redhots....don't even get me started about the lack of good hotdogs in VA :P

PS_ I just realized I am ranting about processed meat products.....

Totally agree about the sausage. And I miss the English breakfast sausage too. The real stuff. I hate hate hate that chemical taste in the US sausages. Buns is a regional word. In FL they looked at me like I'd asked for a butt for my sausage. In fact, just last week the guy at the checkout asked what was in the brown bag from the bakery section and I said two buns. And then quickly had to correct myself to rolls. I think he knew what I meant, though.

Back to shoes in the house.... in Canada you take your shoes off to keep the floors clean. In the US you leave them on to keep your feet clean.

Oh, honey is already taking his shoes off when he comes in now! But yeah, no closet by the front door! My son has an antique wardrobe that my grandfather made, it's doing double duty right now as a closet downstairs!

Didn't realize that buns was a funny word.... My honey thought it was cute for me to say bum, he'd never heard that before!

Also, the trash/garbage debate has been raging, my son already has moved to the trash side...

As to Schneider's Oktoberfest sausages, they're a kind of Bockwurst, so if you ever see Bockwurst somewhere, they'd be worth a try! Knackwurst might be closer to what you're used to if you liked Pinty's from Central Meat Market rather than bratwurst, as the bratwurst here is all Johnsonville, and it's just not the same.... I'll be looking for a polish or Ukrainian deli for sure, they have another kind of sausage that is really good too, don't know the name, but might be easier to find a duplicate here than the bockwurst or knackwurst!

Oh, yeah, and we get the "uh huh" in answer to thankyou all the time from honey, so I just choose to believe it means, "don't mention it!"
