Absolutely. No other administration has pushed as much abstinence only propaganda - rather than effective and working education and prevention programs - to fight the HIV/AIDS crisis on that continent. No administration has spent more to accomplish less. Awesome job!

The Bush administration has spent over $15 billion on care and treatment for AIDS, and

$1.2 billion to fight malaria in Africa. That's more than any other administration has spent.

Besides, nothing wrong with abstinence - Africa certainly needs it.

As much as I loathe the Bush administration, they have done quite a bit for care and treatment of AIDS and malaria in Africa. Maybe not as much as many would like and maybe there is much much much more that can be done in Africa, but no other administration has stepped up (whether under pressure or not) in the last 25 years and done anything to help.

As much as I am a bleeding heart liberal Dem, I'm also very actively involved with the CRS AIDS relief and I advise a group of 45 high school seniors who are involved in AIDS Awareness in Western Washington. Nothing I've read and no one I've talked to involved in ONE, DATA, CRS AIDS relief (or any other relief organization) has ever been able to dispute that although most of us don't like him, Bush has been a source of help to Africa.

Now, his intentions may not be purely philanthropic, but at least he's doing something.

yet that will be overlooked by history as it's a positive note for bush.

Definitely true - something is good, absolutely right.

The problem is - its not as good as it could be because it essentially panders to the Christian Conservatives. Something like 1/3 of the funding MUST be spent promoting abstinence-only programs, if my reading is correct. That's a pretty explicit agenda - and IMO a poor use of that extra money.

If it were that easy to abstain from sex - you'd think most men, being content with their own left hand would be sexually content and would never seek the company of a woman.

Call me old-fashioned, but I'd like to believe that most men don't seek the company of a woman just for sex.

You're changing the context here - the train of thought you were on thus far is about sex and fulfilling sexual urges without having sex.

Just pointing out that - masturbation (for example) isn't really a substitute for sex. If it were - men in sexless or low-sex relationships wouldn't have affairs and would surely be happy with their hand and a tissue... Just isn't the case.

This is a silly argument...at least in the context of effectively combating AIDS in Africa. Teaching abstinence alone is not the answer.

No, it's just that we could get more bang for the buck if we were to support the enlightened route of education and prevention rather than almost solely focusing on the route that holds the least promise in the real world. More lives could be saved and more children could grow up with their parents. Despite his wanting to help - which I note very positively - one ought to be permitted to question the path chosen and whether we get the maximum return on our investment. ;)

Indeed it isn't. There's nothing wrong with abstinence, but promoting it to the exclusion of every other form of sex education would be like selling someone a car without seat belts or an airbag - and telling them not to drive too fast.

Life is full of risks.

Its stupid really - the church has lost the abstinence battle in the western world - moral-absolutist approaches to sex-education simply don't work, practically. Yet - they think they'll have more success banging the same drum in the developing world.
