I think mulatto is black + white.

Mulatto is one of many terms to describe black + white. There is also quadroon, octaroon, etc. to note the percentage of black ancestory.

I have also heard the terms "high yella" and "redbone" to describe mixed race people. A "high yella" is a light skined person of African decent and a "redbone" is a person of African decent that has redish hair and/or freckles.

Are these terms offensive? They are only if you are offended. If you aren't offended...they aren't offensive. ;)

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

Yes, they're super offensive and racist.

I think M prefer's mestizo. He's obviously non-white, though. He thinks he has some black in him, but doesn't seem to want to say he has any indigeno in him ... I think he does. He doesn't see why it matters to Americans so much, though. Seems to be a very American thing to break down all the pieces so much.

interesting then that 95% of the time i've heard them used, it's by blacks to describe other blacks. and usually it's all about how how a redbone gal makes them so hot :P
