I'm new here and confused about what the rules are regarding visiting my husband after he sends in the petition to admit me. I live in Toronto. My fiancee and I will be married here in April but I have read that it may take a few months to get the Ontario marriage certificate. While we are waiting for that and before we file the petition, I would like to visit him in the U.S. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Cheers...Jane.

Most people don't have too much trouble visiting fiance's once the petition is filed. The best advice i can give you when attempting to do this is to never be dishonest............ but also not supply too much information unless specifically asked. And always be prepared to have to turn back. It just depends on the officer you get when crossing.

I travelled monthly to DC while our cr-1 was in progress. I never had 1 problem, but thats just my experience, others have been denied entry. Be honest, answer the officers truthfully, but dont add on to much!! Try not be nervous, have proof of ties to Canada(letter fromemployer, lease, etc) Do not have lots of luggage! And have aplan in case you do get denied entry!! A few people that I have read that have been denied, it did not cause any problems at the interview, but again, all depends on why u were denied! Just my 2 cents!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I've noted that on this topic, people often say "be honest, but don't offer too much if not asked". Do you offer that you have applied for a K-1 visa? Do you refer to your fiance as your fiance or boyfriend? No one has been specific about this!

04/13/06 - I-129F mailed

04/18/06 - NOA1

08/30/06 - NOA2

09/26/06 - received at NVC

09/27/06 - forwarded to consulate

20/11/06 - visa in my pocket!

14/01/07 - POE

13/04/07 - marriage

27/04/07 docs sent in for AOS, EAD, AP

26/06/07 - biometrics appointment

02/17/07 - AP and EAD arrive

03/03/08 - Infopass - where the heck is my AOS interview?? No one knows!

The POE officer would ask busines or pleasure, I would state pleasure and would be returning on so a so date. I never once mentioned I had a cr-1 visa in process. I was never asked that many questions, was vey quick!
