Sara, given the way that USCIS communicates (or doesn't), I'd guess that calling is the only way that you would have found out about the check. Again, I'm very sorry that this happened to you. Eli, it's your turn, si man.

Lowdown on T-B.'s trip: Flew Houston-Guayaquil, stayed overnight in $13 hotel (yuck!), flew to Cuenca on AeroGal ("Aerolineas Galapagos"). Met fiancée, who slowly warmed up as things progressed (after T-B.'s 9-month absence). Checked into hotel ($26/night -- big difference from $13). On Thursday, mostly went shopping, broken up by her need to do things for her customers (pests). On Friday, similar; T-B. switched hotels ($36/night -- big difference from $26). Lost much time because fiancée had to take care of pests (customers). Went dancing with her & her #3 sister (who was in town for school) at a cool nightclub. At midnight, had the band announce fiancée's birthday as her 26th (she was really 33). Si, man.

On Saturday, more interruptions from pests. Fiancee's aunt planned a tea at 4 p.m.; due to delays, fiancée arrived at 5 p.m., T-B. at 6:15 p.m., but it was nice. Fiancee's #3 sister got yelled at on phone by husband (an Ecuadorian "macho") for having the utter nerve to take a night out for herself for the first time in 6 years of marriage. Afterwards, spent time at fiancée's house, looking at consulate papers needed for the interview appointment. Had very productive heart-to-heart discussion, with much emotional intimacy, about life, togetherness, and what T-B.'s house & neighborhood are like, si man.

On Sunday, flew to Guayaquil; had lunch with fiancée's amiga Isabel, a sweet & beautiful lady whose macho husband had spent our ENTIRE previous lunch (last June) criticizing Isabel in every way -- in her presence and to us. (He was not there this time.) Went to two malls; T-B. freaked out staff at Taco Bell in the food court by ordering (& eating) 6 tacos. ("Ses tacos??? SES?!") Checked into nicely air-conditioned hotel ($36/night) as base of operations and place to take shower before red-eye flight (12:35 a.m.). Fiancee very sad to see T-B. go. T-B. made airport at 11 p.m. and nearly missed flight, due to unfathomable FOUR passport checks and THREE full security checks required by Ecuadorian migration dept. (Thoughts: If they can't trust the first 2 or 3 checks, why have them? Also, if they KNOW that they're going to be dealing with hundreds of gringos all day long, the officers should at least know a LITTLE relevant English. And, if all this stuff is required, at least have more than 4 migration officers manning the 16 stations at the airport when people are trying to catch their international flight! Isn't the point to get the gringos on their way out of the country after charging them the $27.16 exit tax, si man?)

Summary: Positive & VERY necessary trip. Fiancee WILL marry T-B. & move to the Estados Unidos. Si, man!

Si & gracias, man. It was really only 4 days -- leave Wednesday 6 p.m. to arrive 11:30 p.m., then return early Monday (essentially Sunday night) 12:35 a.m. to arrive 6 a.m. (urgh, man). That's Thursday-Friday-Saturday-Sunday together. But, the airfare was excellent (something like $498 r/t, Houston-Guayaquil). Fortunately, given the "quality time" and the emotional/communicative intimacy, the fiancee noted that the 4 days felt like a week. (Unlike the way it sounds, this was a positive comment, si man, and I agreed with her observation.) I had to tell her that she was a brat for continually griping about (what she considered) my ugly shirts, but 4 of those 5 have already been retired as of yesterday's laundry job ("yes, Dear," si man).

Thanks, si man. She even called tonight to find out how I was (= groggy), so the relationship is restored, si man. The big question is whether I should proactively purge all remaining "ugly" shirts from my closets now, or wait until she gets here in case she wants to feel useful. Sigh, man...
