Hi,

I am flying off to the US on friday. I am just wondering what I have to do to so I can start working. Im my DS-230 form I ticked the option for getting my SS card. So will I be able to work with the visa I have in my passport or will I have to wait for a green card?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Technically, yes, all you need is the I-551 stamp you'll get at POE. However, you may find it difficult to find an employer who'll hire you until you have the actual SSN and (possibly) the physical green card, as they aren't the immigration experts we've all become! ;) For the SSN, the general rule of thumb around here at VJ seems to be that if you tick the box on the DS-230 and you don't receive an SSN in about 2 weeks, go down to your local SSA office and request one. The stamp does act as a temporary GC, so if you can bring proof to a potential employer of this fact you might be able to convince them you're street legal! Good luck.

If after 10-14 BUSINESS days, head down to ur local SSN office and inquire about it!! Before you go, download an application form from http://ssa.gov/ and fill it out, in case they do not have u on file. that way ur prepared!! They did not have me on record, so had to start fresh! 1 week later my SSN arrived! take ur passport for ID.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

hi,

You will get your green card in Mail. Please dont wait for the SSN to arrive..... Go to the SS office within 2 days of arrival , go with your passport and original birth certificate ... fill out the form... and you would get yoru social security number in 7 working days. I waited for a month.... to come in mail as i had also ticked in DS-230 for automatic generation of SSN .. which did not happen... ITS BETTER TO GO AND APPLY PERSONALLY

God bless

Jigi

Since you don't have your timeline up I can't see what kind of visa you have. If you did DCF (like me) then you will not get the I-90 (I think it is) stamp in your passport. All you will get is a stamp saying when you were admitted into the U.S.

However all you need to do is get a SSN like everyone says and you should be good to go.

Just co-signing with everyone else - don't except to get your SSN without visiting the office. I ticked the box on the DS-230 but there was no sign of a SS card.
