Hi everyone,

My husband and I are going to have a big religious ceremony in Mexico this summer (we just had a quick civil ceremony here in the U.S.) So we are looking at honeymoon destinations in Mexico. We really wanted to go to Cancun, but its hurricane season during August, so we are trying to decide where to go.

Do any of you recommend any nice beaches?

Well, if you want nice beaches, you'll probably want to stay away from the west coast. They do have some nice beaches, don't get me wrong, but the undertow is so strong that it can be exceptionally difficult (and extremely dangerous) to go swimming in the water there. Fortunately, there are some beaches marked as "safe to swim" but since there are so few, you have to get there early or parking is impossible.

If you wanted to go to the west coast (Baja California Sur in Mexico) then I'd probably recommend San Jose Del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas, depending on your overall preference. San Jose is more of a "Mexican" town while Cabo is more of an "Americanized" place. If you've been to either, you'll know exactly what I mean. Between the two, it's pretty easy to travel to each other, since all you do is drive straight on this long stretch of highway; it really couldn't be simpler. I wouldn't do it at night, though. There are no road lights to speak of on that highway and from what I've noticed, very few drivers seem to obey the laws there.

One last thing... DO NOT cheap out on hotel accommodations. When my wife and I were there, we discovered that there's two types of hotels available -- really good and really bad. Naturally, the price reflected this as well. I can't stress this enough, but go to the best hotel you can afford. You'll be much happier. At the very least, they'll use bottled water for drinking, cooking and ice which is very important for those of us unaccustomed to Mexico.

I'm not sure which one of you is the U.S. citizen and which one is the Mexican citizen, but since at least one of you is native to the country and speaks the language fluently, you'll have a much easier time of it there than my wife and I did.

If you have money to really splurge, Cancun is ok. However, it's not quite the romance spot.

I can suggest Puerto Vallarta, which has been overhauled recently and has some ofthe most breath taking sunsets I have ever seen. Food is amazing; and the Camino Real offers quite nice packages for honeymooners.

If you're on the explore n' trek side, try Bahias de Huatulco, or Puerto Escondido. More on the cheap side; but food is delicious!!!

Wherever you go, don't forget your tanning oil!!!

I like the Oaxaca beaches like Puerto Escondido and all around there. I don't recommend Cabo or Cancun at ALL. Very Americanized and touristic (well if you like that, then its perfect, but for me I wanted to experience MEXICO)

If & when we ever make it to Mexico, I want to hit all the Mayan ruins.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

I was just in Huatulco, Mazunte and Puerto Escondido (all in Oaxaca). They are really nice, but I've never been to Cancun. The first two places are really laid back and beautiful. I went with my fiance and we called it our 1st honeymoon.

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

Northern Baja California is not too bad as a day trip from San Diego... Rosarito beach, etc.

Same ocean, further south you have Puerto Escondido but that place is honestly best for the surfers here...

If Yucatan is on the interest map, avoid Cancun... try somewhere like Playa del Carmen or head south towards Belize- Tulum, etc. Even this places are oversaturated with overdevelopment and too many foreigners... :)

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

We plan on doing our big religious ceremony in Mexico this summer too!

I'm hoping to go to the Mayan Palace in Cancun / Maya Riveria. I think that Maya Riveria is just as pretty as Cancun if not prettier and should be a lot quieter and romantic.

If you decide not to go to Cancun, my very favorite in Mexico is Puerto Vallarta / Nuevo Vallarta. Nuevo Vallarta is a little cooler because it is quieter and the beach is a lot nicer than what you'll find in PV. And if you'r in Nuevo, then you can go into PV and enjoy all the things it has to offer but come back to the nicer beach iat your hotel in Nuevo. It's a really fun place to go and is a little cheaper, but it just isn't as pretty as Cancun.

Xapata!

My husband is from Manzanillo, a port city/resort city, about 6 hours south of Puerto Vallarta. It's more of a vacation place for wealthy Mexicans from Guadalajara and Americans from the midwest (kind of an odd mix). But the other poster was correct in saying that the water is dangerous for swimming in many areas. Also, it is so miserably hot in August and they have hurricanes as well. It is nice however if money is a concern b/c, although they have resorts, there are less expensive hotels that are pretty reasonable if you don't mind eating in local restaurants instead of at the resort.

Also, there is always Barra de Navidad, Jalisco. It's on the border of Colima and Jalisco. I'm thinking that your families know about both since they're from Jalisco. There is a beautiful new resort with protected coves for swimming. The manzanillo airport is equidistant from Manzanillo and Barra.

For our honeymoon we went to the colonial cities of Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende. There are some great bed and breakfasts and little hotels that are cute and very reasonable. We were on a pretty tight budget after filing for AOS. There's beautiful architecture, live music and art. Both cities were great but especially San Miguel de Allende.

I'm sure wherever you go you'll have a great time now that you're through this mess of a visa process.

Barra de Christmas indeed

Puerto Vallarta is also nice

Cancun too americanized

BUT if you decide to skip the beaches and visit cultural sites, ZACATECAS baby! Guanajuato, Morelia (beauuutiful city), Puebla is also super nice. I visited those sites along side with my guera and my parents-in-law 2 X-mas ago and they really enjoy it and still talk about it all the time. We went to Zacatecas (I grew up there), Mexico City (I was born there), Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara, Morelia, Guanajuato and had a great time. In case you travel to Jalisco don't forget to sign up for a tour with the tequileras in Tequila, Jalisco. They show you how the tequila is made, also while driving to Pto. Vallarta you can see all the Agave Azul fields next to the highway (beautiful site).

Good luck and take lots of pics!!
