ensure is pretty good and if you mix some added protein powders they make some at gnc which are designed for women to get the extras we need like folic acid etc. i swear they aren't grainy at all. maybe get one of the frequent buyers cards and you can get a 20% discount to offset the cost.

good luck i hope your sister gets well soon.

She doesn't have any problems with liquids? At the clinic here we have a 7 yr old with this along with massive food allergies. He ended up getting a feeding tube for about 3 months just to give his esophagus a rest and let the inflammation die down a bit. Since then he's been able to do a lot of his foods pure'd

I'm sorry for her. It all sounds pretty awful :(

Well, I haven't tried any of these drinks and they are quite expensive, but here at college stuff like the Naked brand smoothies are really popular. I personally, heck she can definately use the calories, say see if there's a day she's feeling a bit better and run and get her a peanut butter milkshake. Mmmm :)

How about teas is what I'm thinking? This won't help calorie wise but I thought maybe it'd make her feel a bit better or fuller to have something hot in her stomach, and maybe that'd aid in digestion too? Just thinking teas are so packed with antioxidants and great immunity-boosters and things, and different ones are good for different stuff.

I read an article once about a guy that hated vegetables so drank tons of green tea every day because green offers a lot of the same benefits as veggies. White tea is also meant to be quite good now, too. Chamomile will put her to sleep and mint tea really helps sooth the stomach. Maybe you could even put some honey in them, honey's pretty high calorie.

I think you should try to see if there's not ways to get more proteins and veggies into her system, since a lot of this stuff is sugary or fruity. She needs as many quality calories as she can get, I guess :(

Good luck with it. I hope she starts feeling better.

thanks snowy! she will have to have the surgery where they cut the muscle on the outside of the esophagus so she can eat. I think the issue is more WHEN they will do the surgery not it they will do it. They told her at the beginning of January she will have to have the surgery she's just been waiting to have all of the tests done.

Although this page is really for cancer patients, it has links to websites with recipes to jazz up many of the drinks that have been suggested here. It can get really boring drinking the same thing over and over so hopefully some of these recipes might make the drinks more enjoyable.

thanks for the website I will email it to her right now. hopefully she will try some of the things. I bought her some vanilla ice cream to try to get her to drink some of the boost stuff. she already thinks it's disgusting.

What about Ensure or the milkshake-like supplement drinks that are designed for the elderly? They usually have more calories & nutrients than Slimfast.

Can your sister handle drinking smoothies? Because she (or a caregiver) could make them with fruit, yogurt, protein powder, and flaxseed oil. Less chemically, plus then she can control the supplements.

we tried smoothies last week before they told her to go on this liquid diet thing. she said they were disgusting and too fruity...#######? teenagers!

Our Doctor prescribes Med Pass 2.0, Boost, Ensure, and Beneprotein to some of our on the verge malnutrition and low albumin patients. Med Pass 2.0 is good, but it costs a lot.

do you know where I can find the med pass 2.0? cost really isn't an issue to us as long as she is getting some sort of nutrition. if the doctor writes her a script for it my mom can get it with her medical reimbursement fund that she sets aside every year.

I thought the smoothie thing was really popular with teenagers? Guess I am out of touch! Maybe if you get a bunch of starbucks cups that she can carry them around then she will like the liquid drinks! :) Hopefully out of the many options that have been posted she will find something that will suit her tastes.

Family member drank this when losing weight. Not as bad as it sounds.

Lemon can be mixed with olive oil and drunk on a daily basis. All that is required is one organic or unwaxed lemon mixed with one tablespoon of olive oil (preferably extra virgin olive oil) and also a glass to a glass and a half of water whether it be spring water, filtered water or even regular tap water. This drink is an excellent detoxifier for the gallbladder. This lemon/olive oil drink is particularly beneficial for individuals who suffer from gallstones or who are underweight. Lemons are also excellent for combating cancer, projecting the circulatory system, controlling blood pressure, as well as smoothing and toning the skin. Back in history lemons help to prevent the disease of scurvy. Olive oil is helpful to health in its own right. Olive oil helps to protect the heart and it encourages weight loss and helps to combat cancer. Olive oil, like lemons is good for the skin and it is beneficial for those who suffer from diabetes.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Sounds like the illness has maybe upset her taste buds a bit, too :D

Well I hope she feels alright and not just starving all the time, anyway, but it sounds like her mood isn't that bad if she's still so picky and complains about the flavors :P Try getting her disgusting things like brocolli puree soup, maybe she'll like it.

Sorry can't be serious all the time :P
