Hey fellow brits!!

So the hubby, baby and I are considering moving back to good ol' England! We are kinda struggling to make ends meet here as we have no family/support and I pretty much have the best family in the world in England who can help us with the little guy etc so the question is has anyone done it?? Knows how easy/hard it is??

Any info appreciated!

Sammy

Not doing and won't do it unless I ever received a full job transfer/expat package (I am the USC, we lived there for 6 years). We could never afford housing now that we sold and I found that the salaries were half of what I am making now. It sounds like you have no support network in your immediate area, what is keeping you there? How about moving elsewhere in the US?

We thought about it but then we decided England was more for us.... well Europe actually we plan on moving around in the EU. I love California but I hate the long hours i'm working, the healthcare is ridiculous, lack of vacation time etc etc. They'll have to get used to the weather though haha!! My husband really loved it in England and Europe so wants to live there for a while.

Our tentative plan is to come back to Wales when I have my US citizenship, and then stay here as long as it takes Shan to get her UK citizenship. We'll both have either passport then so we have more options. It's all up in the air though, hard to tell which is going to be best for us and our family.

One thing I will say for sure is that I don't think we'll actually move back to the UK until at least one of us has a job to go to, assuming that's possible to arrange overseas. House prices and rent such as they are, it'd be a bit of a drain to just up and move.

Short answer: no. I've done the whole uprooting myself and moving across the Atlantic thing twice and it was far more traumatic the second time, after I'd put down roots in the UK. If we were to go back in 10 years, I think I might have a nervous breakdown! Not to mention that Bruce is far happier here in America than he was living in the UK. So nope, not us!

That's a good point. I've found it fairly traumatizing moving to the US. We may go back to Canada when my husband retires. (It's mandatory at age 57 for him in his current position.) But, strangely enough, he mentioned moving to England the other night, so I'm not sure where we'll end up. Either country is fine with me, since that's where all my relatives are. No relatives here in the US, which I think is the main reason why I'm so traumatized. If it's financially feasible, I think I'd like to maintain a home in both Canada and the US, and travel back and forth. Time will tell.... early days yet.

It's always been our long-term goal to move (back) to the UK at some point. Of course we'll wait until hubster has citizenship here. We have property there, so we'd have an immmediate place to stay until we could get something bigger AND he's a maths teacher, so should be able to find work fairly easily. It's finding work for me that has me troubled, and of course missing my family.

I'd go to Northern Ireland in a heartbeat if it weren't for my parents and son. I loved the mass transit; the convenience of everyday things; and the politeness of the people. National health care is attractive to me.

Wes on the other hand - not so much. He felt there was nothing there for him career-wise, plus the memories of discrimination/social tension during the Troubles are deep enough for him to not miss life there.

He says I would never be able to adjust to the damp dark weather.

I know this is the UK forum; but putting my 2 cents in on this subject..........We have no plans to move to Jamaica. In fact, he's completely against it. Not enough opportunities for either of us.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

We will, after he gets his citizenship - if I can make him wait that long!

I love England. The idea of moving within the EU is like a dream come true. Cheap vacations to Europe as well!

I agree with you there! We always book a vacation within a vacation whenever we go to England. It's so much cheaper than booking them from North America.

I'm with most of you that we're going to go back when Neil gets his US citizenship and then stay as long as we have to for me to get UK citizenship then we will have more options for living and working in the EU since I will have UK citizenship too. We don't want to go through the whole visa process ever again!

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.
