The hoover always worked for me. Run it around and you can clean, whilst drowning out the baby's cry! :P

 And when that didn't work, I'd turn up the stereo too!

Gary, babies LOVE to be bundled up snugly (like you see in the hospital). It makes them feel they are back in the confines of the womb and quiets them.

I've used the bundling but I haven't done that lately. They taught us that at the hospital.

Does anyone know at what age that doesn't work anymore?

My niece loved to be swaddled--heck, she even liked it after one year old! It was so funny to babysit her--this big girl who walks around, then WRAPS HERSELF up in her blanket before going to sleep! She looked like a big burrito  .

Well, I tried it on my 14 year old the other night and he wasn't having any of it.

I found it stopped working when they were strong enough to get out of it. That's if you've wrapped them properly, that is. After that..... fresh air works wonders. As long as they're warm, it doesn't matter how cool the temperature is.

My second baby was colicky so she cried almost constantly (so it seemed). The only thing that would stop it was to put her in a baby carrier that is attached to...me. lol. They sell those snugli's now which are cool. That way you can go about your day and do things and the baby is nice and cozy next to you. I think she was just super sensitive to all the sounds and smells and lights and sometimes she just wanted to be back in the womb (so do I sometimes!!!) so the snugli was the closest she could get touching my skin and hearing my heartbeat. :luv:

Other tricks were holding her so that she was facing away from me and my arms pressed against her tummy....that helped if she was gassy. When all else failed I'd pack her in the car and drive around the neighborhood and she'd fall right to sleep. Then I'd just bring her in while she was still in the car seat since I'd be too scared to take her out and leave her in it next to me until she woke up.

Babies are individuals, and there no "works for all" miracle thing

Here's my list:

1. Boobies... Unbeatable in the number 1 spot on the list.

2. Body contact. Lots of it. Mine have been leeches, thriving on body contact with or without motion and sound. Slings are wonderful!

3. Combine 1 and 2 and we got co sleeping, that's what felt natural to us.

4. Noise. Music, singing, humming, white noise. I still run the bathroom fans in two of the bathrooms when the youngest takes his nap, to drown out the noise of the activity in the house.

5. Movement. Holding baby close and taking long, bouncy, rhythmical, "Moosey" steps look hilarious but works for me

5. Routines but with wiggle room for change. Follow a natural rhythm and do what feels right when it feels right.

What others say works for them don't necessarily work for you. What sounds good doesn't always work, and what works for a while doesn't always continue working. Then it's time to try something else.

6. This too shall pass. =)

I used to hum a repetitive sound that vibrated my chest. With the baby on my chest. Like how it must of sound inside my stomach and bounce to the hum. Always worked.

One of my friends loaned me a book, titled something like Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. She and her husband both said that this book helped them become better (and more sane) parents.

Best of luck!

When I babysat or work in the church nursery, what usually works for me is to hold them close, and sit in the rocking chair. I'll sing little songs to them and gently massage their back while rocking them. I'm infamous for getting fussy babies to calm down. :)
