My hubby and I are moving to another apartment they need to a do background check on him. well we are in the crack between K-1 and AOS. we sent our papers about a week ago. they told me that if his ss doesnt work then we have to wait longer to get into the apartment but the problem is that this is the perfect apartment for us. what should i do about this? bc we cant even reserve it unless they do the paper work for it. thank you for your help

i did a change of address when i was doing the K-1 visa. we were at the end of it though not the begining and they had no problem changing my address but it is a different process.

well the thing is that we are moving with his brother and it will be 3 of us well we all have to do an application. can we still use his social sec. for the application even though it was just for work?

Not following you, whose SSN? SSN by itself is not work auth, you need Citizenship, green-card or EAD to work.

Anytime an alien and their sponsors move they are required by law to report this to USCIS by filing AR-11 and sponsors file I-865, this is the law.

Not following you, whose SSN? SSN by itself is not work auth, you need Citizenship, green-card or EAD to work.

i am not talking about that at all bc i know about that and the forms are ready but i am having a problem with i dont know why it might be a problem if we use his soc.? bc they told me to wait all they do is a background check and credit check. will his social be valid even all we did was a k-1 visa and it has expired. thats all i want to know is can i use his social security number for a valid credit check and background check?

sorry i think i didn't make myself clear so you guys can understand what i'm talking about, my problem right now is me and my hubby and his brother want to move to an other apartment and whenever we went to get the paper works from the rent office they said that they need to do a background cheack on the three of us so we can get that apartment the problem is we just sent the AOS last week and my husband's SSN is expired , i just wanna know is the apartment rent office can still use his SSN to do backgroung cheack about him or we need to wait until he will recieve his EAD and the SS ???

SSN is still a valid number that you can use on the rental agreement, even without an EAD or Green-card.

I dont think they will find anything on a back-ground check using such a new SSN though.

We had the same problem when I first arrived. Although my wife at that point didn't have much credit and I had 0! There wasn't an apartment place that would touch us with a mile long pole that wasn't in the ghetto! We unfortunately didn't have anyone to cosign for us. The only way around it was if we made enough money which we didn't. We only just made enough to get the K1 paperwork processed.

I don't think your SSN expires even if the K1 does, although I think the K1 officially expires when you become legally married? You might still be able to overcome your problems if between the 3 of you make enough (I know one isn't working) to cover it. I think a lot of places ask for you to make 3x the rent (if I remember correctly?). If you could get a cosigner that might also help move things along.
