Chocolate's bittersweet economy

The human cost of chocolate

Seven years after the industry agreed to abolish child labor, little progress has been made. Seventy percent of the world's cocoa beans are grown in West Africa, where working and living conditions are brutal and many workers are underage.

Very Interesting..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Chocolate tastes good. Thank you, child laborers! Stay strong and don't stop! :jest:

Tastes even better when you know that little children work hard day and night to make it.

Yes, but nothing like the sweet taste of sweat, blood and tears of young children and the bitter tang of hopelessness.

I would like to say that I will protest outside of Godiva's, but I fear the smell of the vanilla truffle will force me to abandon my picket.

When I was in the UK they had a good amount of Fair Trade products for sale (tea bags, choc, clothing, sugar, coffee etc). I'd always buy them when I could. I wish there was more here in the USA.

A clear and simple way to exercise ethical responsibility. Nothing wrong with that.

I am the same here with coffee as well. I figure I buy enough of the stuff (coffee) that I might as well pay $2 more a pound and make sure it's fair trade.

Have you ever tried this: http://divine.serrv.org/crs/cart.php I have bought Divine chocolate for years and it's excellent.

Ten Tousand Villages sells fair trade and organic chocolate, as well as a whole bunch of really cool stuff

I buy fair trade when I can, there's not much of it outside of specialtiy shops around here, but wonder of wonders, Sam's Club has a fair trade coffee!
