Well.. we may have found a place after all!!! The wife stopped by a place on her way home the other day and came across a nice wee house for rent!! 2 bed, 1 bath, more than big enough for 2 people or more if we had any visitors from back home, hard to beat a cheap holiday!! They allow pets and it has a nice big yard in the front and back!! The rent appears to be affordable for this area and it looks like it was just listed for rent when she found it! We had a look at the place already, filled out an application, met the lard lord and talked to him for a while. If everything goes well we could possibly be moving in, in a few weeks time!

It was a big shock to talk to a landlord who is willing to have repairs done, said he'd have the carpets shampooed, the place painted and ready for us! Said if there are any problems that are not minor then he has a handy man that would be sent over to carry out repairs!! Our current landlord last seen this place just after we moved in.. only reason he never came back is we always paid the rent on time.. Our most recent electric bill was just over $60 because we have no power in half the house  ah well..

Sounds lovely Aidan...I certainly hope you and your wife are going to be moving soon! The whole time we lived in that h3llhole of a house we rented (and even before my husband came to the US) I never saw my landlord...and I rented this place for almost four years. I too paid my rent on time as well. Ah well, it's done and over with now and what we have in comparison...well, there IS no comparison.

In fact we are moving soon! We can't wait!!! No more running extension cords to the bedrooms (because none of the outlets don't work anymore).. no more turning off one window A/C just to turn on the other.. or the dryer or the microwave.. or actually anything stronger than a bulb! We haven't seen our "landlord" over here since just after we moved in back in November 2005!!

As you say, what is done is done! We're just happy to be leaving and moving into a real house!!

You might try the chamber of commerce in the city you are looking for a place in or take a look at property management companies.

believe me our slumlord has bought and paid for this place long long ago!!

He might have HELOCed all equity from the house... or he might just be a jerk. Anyway, I am glad to hear that you found something nice!

Weill I thought I'd give an update. We are out of that $hithole and we have moved into the other place we found. This place is very nice. About half way from my job and the wife's job. Front and back yards are very nice and they have grass too!! I don't know how we managed to hold out in that other house for so long.. we have central air and heat.. the other place we where down to just one window a/c... We are extremely happy with this place!!

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement.

I just saw your post and as I was reading I went from collecting my 2 cents to give you - to saying Congratulations!!!

Check out this link, Aidan. There's a 2 bedroom apartment for $650/month.

My wife will be here next week, and I am in the process of moving right now. I rent and pay about $1,400 for a one bedroom.... I think it is time to say "Hello Mount Dora!" hehe

Good God! $1,400 a month? Either you make a lot of money or that is in a very, very nice part of town!

Congratulations, Aidan!!! Finally out of that place.

1400 is actually not that much in Los Angeles. In New York, it might get you a tiny one-room studio in Brooklyn or mediocre one-bedroom in Queens. :)

yeah we looked at a place that was only half decent and it was on a terribly busy street... and it was about 1200 to 1500 a month..

the place we have now is ten times better and it is about 995 but it prolly should be more but I am not complaining...

These rents hurt to read. I just started renting a 2bd/2ba 946 sq ft apartment with a nice lakeview and almost no adjoining neighbors for $739 a month. That is slightly pricey for this area.

Lakeview? Almost no adjoining neighbors?? 2bd/2ba??? I'm jealous. I have to admit.

We're considering 1br shoeboxes for $2300-2500.

Hey Aidan, glad to read about the move!

Where up north are you thinking of moving too?

Where up north!!.. (hehe... up north) We're planning on it in maybe a few years now. We were going to make the move sooner only the economy kinda is goin the same way as every business bush has ever run.. right down the toilet. Jobs didn't materialize up there as we had hoped after quite a few months of searching. Why leave fairly secure govt jobs here for unsecured work up north?
