My husband just received his I-184 package and we are filling it out now. He falls short of the poverty guidelines and we were thinking of using his vehicle as an asset. It says in Part 7 of the step by step instructions "you may not include the net value of an automobile unless you show that you have more than one automobile and at least one automobile is not included as an asset". How can you show that you have more than one automobile? We will have two vehicles after I move down here, do you think they will count that? Has anyone else used a vehicle as an asset on their I-184. Hoping to be able to do this instead of asking a joint sponser.

Thanks

I think that only assets of the US citizen can count. If you search the Canada forum, you'll find that there was one couple who could not use the Canadian's retirement money as an asset because it was Canadian.

If your USC does have two cars, I think that a copy of the car's title and registration would show ownership.

LadyJane brings up a good point. Since one of the cars you own isn't actually in the U.S. - it is possible they won't accept it as part of the affidavit of support. As mentioned by coolgt, if you have some cash in the bank, whether in Canada or the U.S. - that is a much more viable option for assets.

The Canadian citizen who couldn't use his Canadian pension as an asset is Colin Wilson:

You can get a joint sponsor which will take care of this issue.
