I am trying to understand the process of filling K-3 visa for my spouse. I am US citizen. While looking at timelines for K-3 and/or IR-1 visa, I see dates for "Packet 3 sent" "Packet 3 received" "Packet 4 sent" "Packet 4 received". What is packet 3 and packet 4 and what's in them??? I see no mention of these terms while going thru guides for K-3 or IR-1 visa?

Also regarding K-3 and IR-1 visa...Does applying for K-3 automatically imply that I am applying for IR-1 as well. or is it vice versa? When do I decide that I want to go K-3 route (which will entail applying for Adjustment of Status to get Green Card for my spouse once she enters US on K-3 visa) vs. IR-1 route (which will mean that when my spouse enter US she will become Lawfull Permenent Resident and will get her Green card right away)

thanks in advance for your reply.

packet 3 is instructions and things to do in order to get interview.

packet 4 will be sent to you after you return packet 3, everything is correct.

packet 4 will contain appointment letter and other things you must do before the interview, like medical exam

each consulate will send you the info. check your consulates website and it will give you an idea of what to expect.

this is the one for china

That's true.. depending on consulate. In my husband's country both packets 3 & 4 are picked up (or sent to you) together and packet 3 has to be returned at the time of interview.. packet 4 is only the appointment letter (interview date etc.) But yeah, in short, packets 3 & 4 come after the I130 and I129F approvals and after your case has made it to the embassy.
