No ,you're not obligated to make appointment for another extension but ...how about if you need to leave the country and say you want to travel ?

No matter what you choose you still have to waist time and go through a lot of aggravation with them, that seems to be the case with USCIS

A lot of people here on VJ think that just jumping in with another application (N-400) and pumping more money will speed up the process but I think that's totally BS .We should not have to do that kind of compromise

You realize that many people on VJ are going ahead with naturalization because they wanted to in the first place, right? And that getting citizenship is taking up to 18 months or so (the last I checked) -- hardly speeding things up!

I don't plan on applying to naturalize for the sake of hastening my I-751 along, but because I meet the standard timeframe to apply and it was a decision my husband and I came to independently of the mess TSC was in. If I wasn't in the mood to get citizenship, I'd sit and wait for the 10 year card to come along. Simple as that.

Well...if that's your goal then you may as well do it ,I understand that but like I said before ,no everyone wants to become a US Citizen at least for the moment and therefore why this I-751 application should be escalated through another application (N-400) .Not done with one after one year and you are ready to jump again into another long and agonizing process. To me is more ...one at the time but that's just my impression

The question that really needs to be addressed is, "Do you become out of status, if you don't have your passport stamped, and your GC and NOA are expired?"

As far as proving your legal status here in US, for employment or any other purpose, is this required?

How long does it take to complete the infopass, for example if I wanted to get an infopass ASAP, would that be within a week, or are we talking about a month?

Any response is appreciated.

When I booked my infopass, there were a few appointments within days, and I booked one for the following week. The site has a calendar that shows free slots.

I went with the intention of getting a stamp in my passport so I can travel. The officer checked her screen and it said "they" we processing applications that were a few weeks prior to the date on the USCIS website. She said I would more than likely get the GC before I needed to travel and in any case wouldn't stamp my passport without seeing proof I was travelling (tiket, reservation etc) so I'll have to book another appointment.

I didn't ask her about work authorisation. Wish I had thought of that at the time.

If you are eligable for citizenship and that is what you want, what you should do, is send the N-400, which will push adjudication of the I-751 if it already hasn't been adjudicated.

Having a petition or application pending, an alien is not rendered "out of status". An alien becomes "out of status" if he or she has a petition or application that has either been denied, or if he or she fails to apply for some sort of adjustment before a stated deadline. In the scenario you pose above, the alien's status is still one of a permanent resident but without a document to demonstrate that status.

When will you realize that this isn't a quick fix? It is just the next thing in line of this process.
