My husband graduated from college as an engineer in Morocco. Now that he's here, I'm really confused on how to help him get settled into his first job as an Engineer. I come from an artist background with little knowledge on how that industry works. ;) Anyway we've typed up an American style engineer resume (he's only done internships and gone to school) but do companies REALLY check if you graduated from an accredited university? Is it completely necessary to do the WES or other company similar to translate his grades to an American accredited degree? He wants to do it eventually so he can get into a masters program but is it necessary to do it now to get him in his entry level job? Is it true he needs to take some kind of exam? If so, which exam is that? Has anyone here gone through this process already and can help me or point me in the right direction? I feel bad my husband is relying on me yet I don't know how to help him very well.

Yes it is important. What kind of engineer is he? If you really want to get far in the engineering field (depending on the type he is), getting your PE license is very critical.

He is a Mechanical Engineer. He said he would like to start with project Engineering for building hotels, homes, etc. But I think that highly depends on what his options are! Is getting a PE license (whatever that is. lol) required for that? How do you get that? His English is average, not fluent yet.

The PE license is not needed but it puts you ahead of many. http://www.ncees.org/exams/professional/

It's almost like going to school and getting your bachelors degree. Many do that. Others go further and get their masters. That is analogous to the PE.

He should also get all of his academic records and transcripts sent to him from the school he attended and have them evaluated by a reputable credential evaluation service for US equivalence. Click here for a link to one such company that can provide the service.

I am not advocating this particular service, rather only providing it for reference.

Good luck!

If he is going to design bldgs that one day will be occupied by the public, he will be required to be a REGISTERED Engineer in that particular state or work under the direction of a Reg Mech Engr. The first step to becoming registered is to take the EIT (Engr in Training) that is offered by all states probably twice a year.

Passing a Registration Exam is not easy nor is the EIT exam if you have been out of school for a few years.

Contact the State bussiness and professions office that registers engineers....;probably need a phone book by state offices. They have specialized books on solved previous exams avaiable.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

do companies REALLY check if you graduated from an accredited university

I'm an engineer in the Defense industry and I can tell you that we indeed verify the accreditation of degrees issued in foreign countries. Don't know anything about the process done though as that would be an HR task.

If he's a mechanical engineer it certainly would behoove him to obtain his P.E. The catch-22 here is that I believe that he requires an accredited degree to take the test.

You can take the EIT even without a college degree....but you must pass the EIT and work for 5(?) years in order to take the Registration Exam.

All big name companies will check out your education...they send letters to the Registar of the university.

Yes, since educational curriculum to obtain a degree differs by country, the education must be verified as equivalent to a degree obtained in the US. If the requirements for getting the foreign degree are found insufficient then catch-up courses are likely to be needed.

Thanks, I was ignorant of the process. I know there's some process in place because I have a foreign born co-worker that complains incessantly about the fact that his graduate degree wasn't recognized at the time he was hired and uses that argument to complain he's being under employed.....Perhaps.

Hmm, I know that most of our M.E.'s have a P.E. as it's pretty much a job requirement these days and if they don't have one, then they're at a disadvantage.....

my husband's a civil engineer....we already had his degree evaluated--it was from egypt...

we used ECE--Educational Credential Evaluators....i'm in new york, but i have a friend who works as an engineer in virginia and she gave me a list of evaluators that her company accepts..and this was one of the top three...we paid a little under $200..

i think the site is ece.org ...if you google it, it'll be the first thing to come up, i believe..

chances are, any job you apply to will ask for an evaluation...

my husband's not here yet...but i'm so worried about it...i really hope he can easily find a job...he's very hardworking and loves his job..and he had a really good position back in egypt...i hope its not so difficult for him here...

..is that exam required even if he has an BS in Civil Engineering??--i'm referring to the EIT exam...and the PE exam, doesn't that require a min. number of years of experience??..

::There’s a laugh in my eyes::

There’s a waltz in my walk

And it’s been such a long time

Since there was hope in my talk

If you never knew

What it is that’s new.. it’s you

‘Cause when your hands are in mine

You set a fire that everyone can see

And it’s burning away

Every bad memory

To tell you the truth

If it’s something new.. baby it’s you

It’s you in the morning

It’s you in the night

A beautiful angel came down

To light up my life

The world’s a different place

Where nothing’s too hard to say

And nothing’s too hard to do

Never too much to go through

To tell you the truth

Everything that’s new.. baby it’s you

It’s you in the morning

It’s you in the night

A beautiful angel came down

To light up my life

My life, my life

Ohh

So if I get to grow old (oh if I get to grow old)

With many years behind me (many years behind me)

There’s only one thing I want (aahh)

One thing I need beside me

For all that you are

For everything you do

For all that you’ve done

Just for showing me the truth

It appears to vary from state to state...

All applicants for registration as an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) in Georgia must pass a written examination in the fundamentals of engineering before registration can be granted by the Georgia Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. The EIT registrants may, after a minimum of four (4) years of professional work experience, apply for registration as a Professional Engineer. All states have similar requirements.

Are you willing to move for work?
