I would also add that the Cannon Powershot 1000 takes great video capture. It comes out in .avi format which I like better than the .mov format the Kodak cameras have. The only beef is the movies come out really big. You need a 1 gig or better card to really use the video feature.

We always had the Kodak easyshare cameras and were happy with them. Luz takes a lot of pictures and tends to wear out cameras rather quickly. I tried getting her a new Kodak for Christmas but the pictures were not very clear. Thinking we just got a bad one we returned it for the next model up and found that the pictures were still sub-standard. The person at the camera department told us that Kodak is subbing out the guts to it's cameras now to China. Don't know if that is true but I can say the newest crop of Kodak easyshare cameras suck. I finally get Luz the Cannon Powershot SD1000. Great little camera! She loves it! I would recommend it as a mid-priced camera ($200).

Oh really? She takes a lot of pictures? We hadn't noticed.

I need to get a new HD to store all the pics. She is pushing 50 gigs right now. But all is cool. If you look at our web site you will see that we have documented our lives pretty well. Digital is so great, before I would have stacks of picture albums and boxes of pictures. This is so much better. I do need to back all this up again though. I will buy a new stack of DVD's to burn them all to.

My newest digital camera is a Fujifilm FinePix A900, which can take up to 9MP pictures, record video at 640x480 (with full audio), has tons of options to set, can use both Secure Digital and xD-Picture memory cards (I prefer SD cards, since they're just as good as xD and less expensive), and uses two AA batteries as a power source (I hate rechargeable cameras, as the battery always seems to run out at the worst possible moment and eventually these types of batteries no longer hold a charge).

When it comes to the megapixel (MP) amount, don't be fooled by the idea that the "greater the number, the better the camera." Yes, a 12MP camera can take photos at a higher resolution than a 5MP camera, but let's be honest... how often are you really going to need images of that quality? I've taken 5MP pictures before (my previous camera was at 5.2MP) and the overall resolution was around 1600x1200. That's still above what most people run their monitors at today, so unless you plan on doing some serious print work or professional pictures, there are other more important things to consider before megapixel count.

My camera has a feature that negates "shaking" so if my hands move or I'm standing/sitting on an unstable object, the camera will automatically compensate for this and make sure the image isn't blurred. This has become a more common feature on most newer digital cameras and something I would highly recommend taking, as it's much easier than packing a tripod. ;)

As Scott already said, optical zoom is superior to digital zoom. If it all possible, attempt to find a camera with a high optical zoom; digital zoom is a secondary concern. Just so you know, digital zoom isn't terrible, but the image quality presented isn't nearly as fine as that of optical zoom. I've still managed to take some long-distance shots that look decent with digital zoom, but I've only used digital zoom because it was absolutely necessary.

ISO is important, especially if you're going to take pictures in low-light situations. The higher the ISO, the the darker surroundings you may be in and still get a good shot without resorting to using the flash (which generally washes out some color and produce red-eye). Most cameras today go up to anything from an ISO of 800 to even 3200.

The better digital cameras have many preconfigured settings that you can switch to, which automatically adjust the f-stop, shutter, flash, ISO, white balance, color, slow-synchronization, red-eye reduction, and so on. Manual is always an option as well, where you can adjust everything yourself, but most people rarely bother with this.

I have about 58 gigs now, including photos I've scanned from film.

You can't go wrong with a Canon Powershot. They take great pictures and are all very reasonably priced.

If you're looking for quality rather than low cost, check out a Sony or Canon EOS Digital SLR.

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
