UK Police record request from abroad

Hi all,

My wife spent a year in the UK studying in Leeds University, so we need a police record from them. We found the form to request it (http://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/section...77&iid=3984), but first we wanted to ask them about how we can pay the fee since neither of us is anywhere near the UK, and if they would mail it back to an overseas address. But all we got is the runaround, everyone telling us to contact someone else, and they never give email addresses, just phone numbers! (Now they are referring us to some office called APCO, I don't even know what it stands for...) Has anyone ever managed to request a UK police record from abroad?

I found this form (http://www.met.police.uk/information/request_forms.htm) linked from a VJ post, and even nthough it's called "Police National Computer Form (Form 3019B)", it says you shouldn't use it if you didn't live in the London metro area, is that true? (Not that it would help much, it still requires a 10 pound fee that you can't even pay in euros...)

Yes that is true MET handles London.

Police Records

Available. Immigrant visa applicants who have resided in the United Kingdom for six months or more since the age of sixteen are required to obtain a statement from the National Identification Service, Subject Access Office, Room 331, New Scotland Yard, Broadway, London SW1 OBG.

This statement will serve to advise the consular office whether or not any criminal conviction is held against the applicant. The National Identification Service does not accept applications from individual applicants; the request must be made through local police. By law, it can take up to 40 days to receive a response. The fee for this service is 10 British Pounds Sterling.

Persons resident outside the United Kingdom should write to the Data Processing Officer of the police authority where they last resided in the United Kingdom to obtain the appropriate application form. Residents of the United Kingdom should apply to their local police station where they may obtain the application form. When completing the application form, the applicable category is “Prosecution/Conviction History”. The local police (or data protection officer), will submit the application to the National Identification Service and the response to the application will be sent directly to the applicant.

Yes they will send it overseas. While you have to apply to West Yorkshire it will come from the National Identification Service at Scotland Yard and I know they send them overseas.

Do you have friends or family in the UK who you can send the completed form to and have them put a cheque in with it. If not can you get a bank draft or similar from a local bank in UK pounds. If not can you get the cash in UK pounds and send it by UPS or Fed-Ex, safer for cash than ordinary post.

If you are really stuck and don't want to use cash, I can e-mail my son a West Yorkshire police officer and have him found out, if he can, if there are any other ways you can pay.

From the WYP website:

Your Subject Access application will cost £10. You are encouraged to pay by cheque as regulations over the handling of cash may delay your application. Cheques etc. should be made payable to ‘West Yorkshire Police’. Postal Orders must be UK Postal Orders.

There must be a way around this. It is hardly 'Overseas' friendly.

There seems to be a new system in place in the UK - a pilot scheme where the form now costs £35 not £10
