hello all

quick couple questions.

-our aos for permanent residence was just approved without an interview. is this normal/routine?

-is our permanent resident card the same thing as the green card?

-as far as i understand, although it states the card is permanent, it is also conditional; right? and an i-751 needs to be submitted in approximately two years to remove the conditional status, right? so our next step in this process, is basically two years from now to remove the conditional status?

thanks in advance for your much need advice and help

Quick answers

Yes No rhyme or reason why some dont have an interview, usually cause of case backlogs at your local office from historical apperances though... but dont quote me on that.

Yes

Yes if you have been married less than 2 years when your GC was approved... Check the date on the card when it comes.

Several, if not many, people on VJ have been approved without an interview.

Yes, your permanent resident card is the same thing as a green card.

Yes, it is a "conditional" green card, valid for 2 years from date of issue. You are required, and you will not be reminded by the USCIS, to file an I-751 within the last 90 days of the validity of the green card. That is the 90 days immediately prior to the expiration date on the card. Be sure to put a reminder in a place that will pop up at the right time. If you don't file on time, the green card holder is subject to deportation.

Best of luck,

appreciate the quick responses and of course this has ignited another f/u question. with a conditional permanent resident card/green card

is the cardholder treated as U.S. citizen when travelling abroad in terms of visa requirements to enter foreign countries or does she need foreign visas based on her current country of citizenship, lebanon?

thanks

Everything is based on citizenship, not the green card. The green card has not changed her citizenship.

From the US Dept of State site for a Permanent Resident Alien:

"Travel documents required for entry into foreign countries come within the jurisdiction of the government concerned; information on such matters should be requested from the representatives of those countries in the United States."

For example, if you visit the Citizenship & Immigration Canada website and scroll down to the bottom of the linked page you will see...

VISITOR VISA EXEMPTIONS

Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada. These include:

  • persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence;

yep if a visa was needed before it will still be needed now.

Check the USCIS website for the page now that your a permanant resident. Has alot of useful info. Dont register to vote yet though, this has caused some members no amount of grief even though it says you can vote in some elections just leave it till you know for sure that you can when you apply for citizenship. Speaking of which.. in 3 years from the date on your GC you will be eligible to apply.

When Claudeth went through a lot of the AOS petitions being handled by CSC were being approved without an interview.

If the case was transferred to CSC, most likely it gets approved without an interview (like my case)

-is our permanent resident card the same thing as the green card?

I believe so.

Correct, except you have to remove conditions at least 3 months before the greencard expires...
