Virginia exit polls show support for Obama ran wide

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama pulled support from virtually all sectors of the voting public Tuesday on his way to defeating rival Sen. Hillary Clinton in the Virginia Democratic primary, according to CNN exit polling.

Obama was expected to poll well among young voters, independents and African-Americans and he did -- taking 60 to 70 percent of the votes in the first two groups and nearly 90 percent of black voters, the polls suggest.

But he also was edging out Clinton among voters 65 and older, blue-collar workers and women, all groups that Clinton was counting on as the core of her support.

Ninety percent of the black voters polled said they voted for Obama...

And young voters flocked to the Obama campaign, the polls suggest. Eighty percent of poll respondents under 30 and 67 percent of those under 45 voted for him.

However, Obama also edged Clinton -- 52-47 -- among voters over 60.

And 49 percent of those who voted for Obama were white, a big change from previous contests in which Clinton held a big lead over Obama among white Democrats.

Obama led Clinton 58-42 percent among the women who were polled, took 59 percent of the votes of respondents who said they earn less than $50,000 a year and 62 percent of those who said someone in their household is a member of a union.

He was the winner among respondents who said the economy, the Iraq war or health care -- a trademark issue for Clinton -- was the most important issue to them.

And with 75% reporting, it's 75% - 24% in DC.

With 13% reporting in Maryland, it's 61% - 35% + some uncommitted people.

A 30 point margin in Virginia is HUGE.... she was expected to be competitive there.

And with 75% reporting, it's 75% - 24% in DC.

With 13% reporting in Maryland, it's 61% - 35% + some uncommitted people.

99% reporting in Virginia, same percentage.

89% reporting in DC, same percentage.

Maryland unchanged.

In our house, Obama does. My husband, the registered Republican, absolutely refuses to vote for McCain. He also refuses to vote for Hilary.

Same here. I just won't vote for Hillary. I'd rather support McCain than her. If it's Obama vs. McCain, Obama clearly has my vote.
