I didn't know all that  It scares me when I see a recipe now that calls for corn syrup. I'm just like, "What, you can BUY that? WHAT?"

? Corn syrup is different from HFCS.

Just checked my bread which I'm in LOVE with, been eating a lot of sandwiches lately because just discovered it. It ain't got no HFCS but it's pretty pricey :( Nature's Own wheat stuff. And it's double the fiber :o

I always buy that bread- I usually get it at Sam's.

Oh...

Well that's still really terrifying, what in the world is corn syrup, why did people think it needed inventing? o_O

I have a weakness for corny things...cornbread, grits, nachos tremendously especially and not just because of the piles of goo on them. But corn syrup does not sound appealing...

And neither are corn flakes you can keep those cornflakes suck :(

Overeating is only half of the equation - there is also the American car culture which makes it difficult to work physical activity into your day. Other countries are built around people, not cars, and generally people are thinner. Also, if you are carrying everything by hand from the store there isn't the temptation to buy 2-liter bottles of Coke, jumbo bags of cookies, etc. You ever notice how as people have gotten fatter, so have their cars(SUVs) and the carts/trolleys at the stores? I remember growing up and the carts were much smaller, with the super-size era they are now huge.

If I had a euro for every 1 liter bottle of Pepsi Max I dragged about .5 a km home every other day. LOL. Having to slug it home didn't change my diet. Probably kept my fat in line though. Here I have no chance to do anything like that. The nearest store is a mile away in any direction. No sidewalks for about 80% of the journey and people in Indianapolis hate bikers and pedestrians more than in other places. No thanks. Indianapolis only has itself to blame for being fat. This city doesn't do much to encourage otherwise. Sprallkingdom.

I lived in Indy for several years and rode a bike to work (22 miles round trip). I used the Monon Trail when possible, but I never had any issues when I rode on the roads. In 2 years of commuting, I never had an accident or even a bad experience with drivers. Maybe it depends on where you live.... I lived near Broad Ripple.

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

Corn syrup isn't appealing. It isn't as bad as HFCS, but it isn't good, either. I too have a weakness for corny stuff. Cornbread, grits, tortilla chips, plain-old corn... Potatoes too, which of course aren't very good for you. All that starch/carbs. Carbs that aren't used get turned to fat. I try to eat starchy stuff only for breakfast or lunch so I have a chance to burn the carbs off.

I live just at the southern border between Beech Grove and the rest of Indy. Wasteland of subdivisons in this particular area. I am trying to get out.

Ah, ok. The "redneck" part of Indy. lol. I lived at Emerson and Thompson in Beech Grove for 2 years. I still rode my bike, but I worked at Brooks Auto Care on Emerson, which is a total of a block from where I lived. lol Living down there can make you hate Indiana. The rest of it really ISN'T that bad....

Well, I was on the treadmill at lunchtime today...so I feel a little better :D

Fruits, especially exotic fruits, can be really expensive, but vegetables are usually priced a little better. Carrots, parsnips, etc. are exceedingly cheap here. I've been managing to get my 5 fruit & veg (usually 2 fruit, 3-4 veg) a day while keeping food costs to around £20 a week (I'm really trying to save money, and I like expensive foods).

Oh - and water is (almost) free, so that's all I ever drink.

Right. So I wasn't real determined when the drugs that my doctor prescribed made me gain weight, no matter what I did?

it's sad that the foods that are healthy are the ones a lot of people can't afford

Rey had a shocked moment about that the other day. We were at the grocery store and I'd grabbed one of those readymade salad bags and it was like 5 bucks. Then he saw a huge, huge box of cookies for 2.25. He was like "this is why there is a problem!"

This is not the only problem. Many people just don't have time to cook. And washing and chopping vegetables takes times. Then if buying the ones already cleaned and chopped is way too expensive, buying junk food is a better option.

On the other hand, some people are just lazy. I have plenty of time to cook on weekends, so I usually buy fresh vegetables, not the ones in bags. Sometimes I buy the frozen ones because they only sell a big one or huge amounts fresh. An example, I make soup Sunday with cauliflower, broccoli and carrots. I only use a little bit of each. So buying an entire bunch of cauliflower an entire bunch of broccoli and a bag of carrots with 6 carrots in it, cuz they don't sell single carrots, is not an option. I wind up buying a frozen bag with the 3 of them in it so the fresh vegetables don't go to waste.

That's the only time I don't buy fresh, not because I'm lazy, because I don't like seeing food go to waste.

I don't think that every single person that is fat is fat only because they're undereducated. I think a large majority of people are BUT you have to factor in the people who actually have a disease or some sort of illness that keeps them from moving.

I agree. Not every single person. But some, yes. There are lots of reasons someone is obese: they're ignorant about nutrition, they're lazy, they have a health problem like thyroid, they have an eating disorder or they just love food and don't give a fu*k about health and appearance.

I heard that they think about 10% of Americans have binge eating disorder now. That number sounds high to me, but it's probably a factor. You can have all the education in the world but if you have that, you're not going to stay skinny.

not completely true. it makes more difficult, but there are things you can do to help, like therapy (I know not everybody can afford), so mostly, will power helps and if you can get treatment, it's not easy, but it's doable (if that's even a word).

Neil is more into convenience than healthy. He lives on a diet of frozen burritos, pizzas, cup o ramen. One day he will gain so much weight if he stops doing tae kwon do

Same with Charles mostly on weekdays cuz I don't cook. And he does no tae kwon do. Onweekends he has me cooking healthy, so he's safe :P It compensates.

I don't think I am obese.. I know I am overweight but obese??

A BMI of 30 or more is obese.

Are you obese? Calculate your BMI here!

umm yes I know and mine is over 30 ... 31.9 to be exact...

I don't think I am obese....

That's only a number for you to have an idea of your body mass index. There're other things to consider, like is your weigh mostly fat? Do you have high muscle weight? You can't get a football player for example and calculate his BMI and say he's obese just because his number is high, that doesn't equal being in an unhealthy weight.

If you buy fruit and veg in season it will hardly break the bank. If you want strawberries in the winter, it's going to be expensive.

Right? Apparently California (even though it's proved different) is a land of very cheap organic produce. NOT EVEN CLOSE. I buy plenty of veggies apparently covered in pesticides (oh noes) in the grocery. Even in Cali.

People just need to get off of their arses...........
