mags there is one on thursdays a block or two west of 38th St & Meridian. never checked it out but it's probably a bit far for you anyways

Yeah, over an hour and 20 mins away. :(

I mean, Platy and I do buy fresh veggie from the store, that isn't an issue at all, but it ain't cheap and it ain't from a farmer's market. I'd love there to be a local one, I really would.

looks like you have a large yard why not plant a garden? I'm big on gardens. I think growing up picking fresh veggies every summer and practically eating them off the vines (especially tomatoes) I was spoiled and couldn't live without having a garden every summer

I wish I had a yard. When we buy a house, I'm definitely going to start a garden. My parents' neighbor has 2 rows of strawberries every year, so they are very easy to come by in season. I live in a state where gardens are pretty reliable, so I will certainly do it. Plus, gardening relieves stress and puts you in the sun.

All you need is a modest house in a modest neighborhood

In a modest town where honest people dwell

well, their ad was 5 pages, as was ours, so I can't comment. I tried to show produce only. Obviously we have more choice, being a coastal & bigger city. ;)

I buy fresh fruit and veg and I don't care how much it costs. I'd much rather spend that extra money on fruit and veg than on something else like a 12pk of diet cokes (one of my food vices).

HA I just buy both. (Although it's Rey who buys the diet soda... I buy 2 liter bottles of carbonated water every freaking day). I have a really hard time budgeting about food. My parents somehow gave me the idea that you don't budget when it comes to food, except in terms of calories. So I always buy whatever I want unless it's just ridiculous. Rey does too, and that is why we can't afford extras and whatnot. :)

Alex, you gotta know how to budget food!

Well, I don't have much to compare to in terms of produce prices around the country, but produce is reasonable here and I don't go to farmers' markets.

I'm pretty nosy when it comes to checking out other people's shopping carriages and it's all about choices. You can't afford some apples but you can buy a 24-pack of coke cans?

LOL Jenn people like you keep me from buying the imported Swiss chocolate bars at the checkout sometimes. I've heard several times that New Yorkers are skinnier because of all the walking they do, but I think it's the peer pressure to eat like anorexics. I'm always looking in others' baskets too and it's always soooo healthy. Maybe it's just the grocery store in my neighborhood, but I don't even know how they sell the candy and cookies (which don't even have their own section). Everyone is always buying healthy, natural stuff.

So, I think it must be kind of cultural in some ways. People here are thinner, and they inspire others to be thinner. It's a lot easier to excuse the bag of jelly beans in your cart if the person behind you is buying brownies and cupcakes, but it's embarrassing if everyone else is buying papaya and zucchini.

We can stop the epidemic by giving condescending looks to anyone who is buying something unhealthy!

This isn't to say that I always only buy the most nutritious foods, but in general, going to the grocery store does make me feel better about my own eating habits.

ETA: I shop at the discount grocery store. I'd probably feel inferior if I were to shop at Whole Foods!

Tomato Lust

The tomato vines--seven-footers that suckled round Italian Romas and thick clusters of yellow and red pear tomatoes--are a twisted black heap at the back of our field. The season's last tomato was sliced, laid gently on a slice of semolina bread, dotted with black olive tapenade and then--gone!

Already I am pining. Get clinical and call it a fruit-specific eating disorder; go highbrow and call it an epicurean quest. What my obsession boils down to is Tomato Lust--in my case, long-standing and incurable. TL's closest parallel is love itself. As anyone who adores real in-season tomatoes can tell you, unspeakable effort goes into the seeking out, the courtship of sources, the obsessive hunt for perfection. But the rewards are sweet. The first touch of flesh to lips brings bliss. Joy, wantonness and overindulgence may follow. (I have been known to get what my family called "tomato rash" between my fingers). And finally, as the first gassed-pink winter strumpets commandeer the market shelves, desolation--the end of an affair.

This is the beginning of my favorite food story ever. Does anyone else find this erotic? Does anyone else love fresh tomatoes this much? I do! More people should find a love of the tomato.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

Jenn, I think we really could stop obesity with more condescending looks! I mean why else would that study have said obesity is contagious? If we ostracize people who eat badly, then... they probably won't?
