W-7 FORM FOR INDIA

Can somebody describe the procedure for getting an ITIN number is India so you can claim your spouse for IRS tax return.

I did check the U.S embassy website to see what the procedures …are. form the embassy description it seems very simple but so far that is not the case

1. so far what I know it I need to pay the in HDFC bank before making an appointment …

2. Do I need the copy of the Indian passport notarized in an Indian embassy before?? Going to U.S embassy

If anybody have done this already please advice on the procedures

If one reads the instructions on the W-7 it says:

c Notarized by a U.S. notary public legally authorized within his or

her local jurisdiction to certify that the document is a true copy of

the original. To do this, the notary must see the valid, unaltered

original document and verify that the copy conforms to the original.

U.S. notaries public are available at U.S. embassies and consulates

worldwide. Foreign notaries are acceptable as outlined by the Hague

Convention.

The W7 instructions say a "certified copy" is acceptable... My only guess is that a "certified" copy means issued by the government, which would mean the citizen doesn't make the copy (making it legal). So, maybe this form is what is required in japan... I don't know. My wife just said that it was illegal to copy it and that the government would issue her something to be used in it's place, but she couldn't explain to me what it was she was getting.

guys, i an the U.S citizen ... i am asking help for my wife ?? i know i need a certified true copy of my wife’s Indian Passport…

unfortunately in India it now a walk-in procedure ….. she can’t just walk into the embassy and ask for it ?? it doesn’t work that way ……..

anybody form India has gotten W-7 for their spouses ??

To me My last tax file with her Name is as important as our birth certificate …to prove legal marriage ….

I too was asked by my husband to prepare papers for Form W7 end of last year. I first downloaded the form from the website, filled it and got copies of my passport. Then I called the US Consulate in Karachi for the notary and I was given an appointment. On the day of the appointment, I went to the consulate, and there submitted the documents along with my passport to the officer. He sent me to pay the fee for notarizing document which was $30 and any additional papers would cost $20 and so on. After paying that I was asked to sit and wait for the notary. Then I was called by the notary and she asked me a few questions regarding my husband and our marriage. She then stamped the copy of my passport and signed form w7. It is better to take some extra copies of the filled form and of the passport too.

No the notary only stamps the page that has biographic information...the first page of the passport where it has your name and passport number etc.

I did it through a recognized notary public in India. Then I showed to local IRS, get approved and sent to Austin, Texas.

There is a good news ! I received the ITIN assigned by IRS for my spouse yesterday. It took 4 weeks to get it, though they said 4 to 10 weeks.

I notarized her passport pages from a recognized Indian Notary Public. Other forms submitted were, W-7 and Federal Tax Return.

You don't need to go to American Consulate to get it notarized.

It's very simple. She should make an appointment with the consulate in her area (or the embassy in Tokyo), and they will make a photocopy and notarize it, marking it "for US IRS purposes only."

They charge 3000-4000 yen for this, I think.

Someone elsewhere on this forum said a foreign notary wasn't accepted in their case, so I asked my wife to go to the consulate, which is accustomed to this process.
