Being British I've always had a front loader (we don't do top loaders, as a rule) and they are brilliant; gentler on clothes too. So, when Platy and I bought a new washer and dryer we got front loaders. Still think they are fantastic and they look so nice too. Top loaders, to me, are clunky looking and old fashioned.

But in the UK front loaders stopped being popular in the 1970s so I automatically associate them with that memory.

Yup, Frigidaire Gallery Series. Not too expensive, reasonably priced. I think we picked the pair of them up (washer and dryer) for about $1100.

In general consumer reports tend to favour the front loaders as they treat clothes better (less aggressive than the top loaders and their twisty thing in the middle) and can be more energy efficient.

Edit: Agitator! That's the word! I prefer twisty thing though.... :P

Hmm...me too, brings back memories of watching my mother with a large set of wooden tongs transferring clothes into the spinnning bit  and I'm sure it kind of jumped around the kitchen too

Although when we visited Chris' family in the States I do remember peering into the top loader thinking to myself that I could do a whole weeks washing in one go :P

Thanks, Mags. I've been sold on them for awhile now - bought a Maytag front loader about 8 yrs. ago, but sold it when I sold my house. We were in Home Depot the other day and noticed so many brands now and the prices have dropped quite a bit.
