I-551 Stamp allows you to cross border??

I am a Canadian who came to the U.S. to simply visit my boyfriend and a few months later we ended up getting engaged and married. By the time that we filed for my AOS, I had overstayed. Our interview is now 2 wks from tomorrow. If we are approved at the interview and they stamp my passport, will I be able to immediately cross over the border to Canada, or will I have to wait to get my Welcome to America letter and greencard. I just want to make sure that I would be able to cross the border with the stamp only even though I did overstay during this process. I do not have AP because of the overstay. Thank you all in advance for your help, as you can see, I am officially starting to freak out.

03/20/06: NOA 1 / I-130

03/21/06: NOA 1 / I-485

04/03/06: AOS Interview notice...05/11/06

04/05/06: Biometrics

05/11/06: AOS Interview....approved, pending FBI name check

05/12/06: I-130 approved

05/18/06: NOA 2 / I-130 approval

08/15/06: Email: 'Welcome to America' letter mailed (Day 151)!!!!

08/17/06: Email: I-485 approved & GC ordered

08/19/06: 'Welcome to America' letter rec'd

08/22/06: Email: Notice of approval mailed

08/25/06: GC Finally Received!!

05/15/08: Apply to remove conditions

If the local office where you are having your AOS interview still gives the I-551 stamp, yes, you will be able to leave the U.S. and re-enter with no problems. But, a lot of local offices are no longer giving the I-551 stamp because the Green Cards are processed so quickly now. At the Seattle office, they do not give the stamp any more (at my daughter's interview), but I got the I-551 stamp for my own AOS a year earlier.

My daughter's Green Card arrived 12 days after her interview.

With the stamp you should not encounter and problems. However, many offices no longer stamp passports anymore, because they "claim" the process has been stream lined.

At our AOS interview the officer advised against any travel until he had the green card. They did not give him the stamp. He did receive his green card. He received his green card 18 days later and 6 of those days were the weekend. Good Luck.
