N-400 document checklist

Hi Guys! I'm sending my N-400 next week, but I'm not sure about what documents to send. I was reading this forum a lot and I know it was discussed so many times but I'm still confused. Do I need to send just the documents from "Document Checklist" in Naturalization Guide:

1. A photocopy of both sides of your Permanent Resident Card and

2. Two identical color photographs, with your name and “A-number” written lightly in pencil on the back of each photo.

3. A check or money order for the application fee and the biometric services fee for fingerprinting

If you are applying for naturalization on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen, send the following four items:

1. Evidence that your spouse has been a U.S. citizen for the last three years:

• Birth certificate (if your spouse never lost citizenship since birth), or

• Naturalization certificate, or

• Certificate of Citizenship, or

• The inside of the front cover and signature page of your spouse’s current U.S. passport, or

• Form FS-240, “Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America,” and

2. Your current marriage certificate; and

3. Proof of termination of all prior marriages of your spouse-divorce decree(s), annulment(s), or death certificate(s); and

4. Documents referring to you and your spouse:

• Tax returns, bank accounts, leases, mortgages, or birth certificates of children, or

• Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-certified copies of the income tax forms that you both filed for the past three years, or

• An IRS tax return transcript for the last three years

Or do I also need to send extra evidence of our marriage like we sent with I-751??? (bills, insurance, credit cards and etc.)? I just don't wanna get an RFE since my I-751 still pending. Thanks for ur help!

I just Fed-Ex'd my N-400 on Saturday. It was signed for on Monday, so I'm now officially in the queue . I sent the following:

• N-400 application
• cheque for $675, comprising the application and biometric fees, made payable to "Department of Homeland Security"
• 2 identical photos as per the M-603 instructions (with my name and A# written on back in pencil)
• copy of the front and back of my PR card
• copy of our marriage certificate
• copy of my husband's birth certificate, proving that he was born a US citizen
• copy of my birth certificate, showing my original last name
• copy of my change-of-name deed, showing that I changed my last name to my mother's maiden name in 1998
• official IRS transcripts of our last 3 federal tax returns, which we filed jointly (I phoned the IRS and requested them -- it's a free service and they only took a few days to arrive)
• copy of the mortgage transfer letter (dated December 2006), showing that we jointly own our current residence
• copy of the online property database record (dated January 2008), showing that we still jointly own our current residence

The last couple of items (the mortgage letter etc.) weren't required, but since I'd already photocopied them I included them as extra proof of our financial intermingling Suffice to say, I didn't send nearly as much stuff as we did with the I-751 (which made the postage significantly cheaper!).

I'm also Boston, so it'll be interesting to see how fast they process our apps! Good luck!

ok this will sound really selfish but i'm glad i'm not alone!!! i sent the I-751 last year feb 2 and still haven't gotten an approval. really driving me crazy!! anyway i am going to send a lot of stuff with my N-400 application. i've been doing it little at a time, but basically i'm sending all the things you listed plus copies of everything that has both our names on it (bills, insurance, cars....) you think that's ok???

another question for you....are you going to write the cover letter yourself? i mean, like us, the non-USC need to write the cover letter or the USC?? i'm so confused. my hubby the USC wrote the cover letter for the I-751.

Fingers-crossed your I-751s are processed soon, although at least the I-751 doesn't need to be approved before you can filed for citizenship. If it makes you feel any better, it took them over a year to process my AOS (I was married in April 2004 and didn't get my conditional GC until May 2005...)

Fingers-crossed your I-751s are processed soon, although at least the I-751 doesn't need to be approved before you can filed for citizenship. If it makes you feel any better, it took them over a year to process my AOS (I was married in April 2004 and didn't get my conditional GC until May 2005...)

Oh, and I wrote the cover letter myself

Wow! Miri, I just looked at ur timeline and mine is almost the same....my interview for K-1 was in Feb' 04, we got married in April'04 as well and I got my first GC in May'05 and we're both from Boston...hehe

Blimey! I wonder why it took them so long to process our GCs. It'll be interesting to see how long they take to process our N-400s -- I'm rather hoping that this application doesn't also disappear behind a filing cabinet... Maybe we'll be at the same oath ceremony!

It mentions that a copy of the PR is required. Should we also include a copy of the year extension letter, since our I-751 will not have been approved when we apply?

I'm doing the same thing...sending copies of my GC, extension letter and also when I called 800 number about my case I got a letter from them that my case is still under review
